A stupid question
but why did those objecting so strenuously to Harriet Miers not raise many of the same concerns with John Roberts? I don't see much job-related difference between them, except that Roberts has a SMALL amount of experience as a judge. A key similarity: Both are ambiguous about their positions.

Makes me think that there are some other non-job-related reasons that account for such extremely different reactions.

Just a guess.

3. Seriously though, I reckon you're thinking because she's a chick, right?
I agree, and I also think it works both ways...there is the still-noticeable chauvinism of the Left, and the Right is simply scared of an unmarried woman ("What is WRONG with her?!?!?!").

5. Here's several possibilities but I'm sure there are some I haven't thought
of.

1) sexism or bias against single people, as you said
2) no kids? She must be some kind of FREAK!
3) is she gay? Can't have that.
4) she's close to Bush so the perceived cronyism is crowding everything else out
5) we don't like people who worked too hard to be successful or break down barriers. We Bush-ites like people who like to party hearty and that usually means you don't have time to put in 80 hour weeks. She may hand down a decision that makes US work harder.
6) Ivy-league-ism: People who go to Ivy League schools are smart, but no one else is.
7) what have I left out?
