The 3 Republicans swayed during the "Shame, Shame, Shame" vote
Per THIS article on Crooks & Liars: http://www.crooksandliars.com/2005/10/07.html#a5275

"The House leadership held the five-minute vote open for almost 50 minutes until they could convince three lawmakers -Reps. Wayne Gilcrest (R-MD), C.W. Bill Young (R-FL) and Jim Gerlach (R-PA) -to change their minds. The bill passed 212-210. As the vote concluded, opponents of the bill chanted in unity: "Shame, Shame, Shame!"

Here are the three who made it happen, after being bent over by Tom DeLay and crew. If they are in YOUR state, let 'em know how you feel:

When the book Profiles in Cowardice is written, surely these three weak-kneed Republicans will get a foot note.

6. What they were offered, or how they were threatened...
40 minutes really isn't that long.

There's no way of knowing how many others DeLay and his goons approached, as well as how many (if any) said "no."

The fact remains that these were 3 "no" votes that got strong-armed, wither through the promise of pleasure or pain, and they owe their constituents an explanation.

here's what i sent young . . .

Shame! I am appalled at your performance yesterday in the House. This bill will only benefit Big Oil, which is swimming in profits, and does not benefit your constituents. You should be ashamed for letting Florida down.

I suppose next you will be voting for oil drilling off Florida's shores.

16. Democratic press conference
Pelosi & other Democrats gave a blistering press conference yesterday about this energy bill. Pelosi kept talking about the "culture of corruption" & "shameful behavior" of the Congress. Then the minority whip talked longer about who changed their votes (apparantly these 3 + 1 who abstained). Then he gives a laundry list of all the other bills Republican corruption has changed. It's really pretty interesting (& infuriating!).

17. My letter to Young, MY congressional representative:
Edited on Sat Oct-08-05 04:13 PM by bj2110
Representative Young:

I am thoroughly disgusted. My own representative (you) could not stand up and vote what you believe in. Yesterday's fiasco in the House and your subsequent Yes vote for a obviously partisan, corporate leaning energy bill reaffirmed my lack of faith in our Republican leadership. The word is that you got strong-armed and changed your vote during the hour-long muscle session allowed to get the slimy bill passed by the slim two vote margin. Whether or not this is true is a moot point.

The bottom line is that you voted for it. A bill that will further nuclearize our dependance on foreign oil, while lining the pockets of already fat cat energy companies. Not a single Democrat voted for it. And I respect them for their unity. I also see this as proof that the members of the house who were on the fence (apparently, you) got persuaded to stick with the party and their ties to energy money as opposed to voting to Florida's citizens' benefit.

I would love for you to explain to me the reasoning behind your vote. I'm assuming you have a logical explanation, and not one that shows you were bullied into the yes vote. And, if you do have a logical explanation, I would also appreciate the opportunity to express my opinion in opposition to the bill and to show you where you are wrong. As a constituent of your congressional district, I know i have the right to that opportunity.

20. What I still don't understand, why build NEW refineries?
Why don't they just re-open a few of the 176 refineries that Oil Companies have closed over the past 25 years to drive prices up?
