Here we go again: "Alabama Senator Hank Erwin: Katrina was God's wrath."

Alabama Senator Hank Erwin: Katrina was God's wrath.

As I mentioned earlier, the wingnuts heads are all exploding with racism and the bible over Katrina. Erwin's statements are a bit more scary because he holds office. When you see Hank you figure Falwell or Robertson, but not a State Senator.

Here's the transcript. Here's an article.

As you know, I'm not against religion or God or spiritual beliefs. I am against idiots like Erwin. The frightening thing is that people like Hank are being elected more and more in our country and our media will not call them out when they sprout nonsense like this. He's all smiling and so taken with his opinions. Why hasn't Las Vegas been hit with something you pompous fool?

Erwin: Well, I think, if you look at whats going on, this whole region has always known that, with the church, that New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are known for sin. And if you go to a church and you read your Bible, you are always told avoid sin and that theres judgment for sin. And I just think that, in my analysisand I cant speak for everybody, but I believe that, if you look at the factors, that you had a city that was known for sinthe signature of New Orleans is the French Quarter, Bourbon Street. It is known for sin. read the whole transcript"

Scarborough makes a good point in his close when he says:

"All I will say is this. When you look at Matthew 25, and the disciples ask Jesus, how do we get to heaven? Thats what they were interested in. We want to sit on the right hand of the father. How do we do it? Jesus said, you take care of the poor. You give the thirsty water. When they come to your door and they need food, you give it to them. When they need clothes, give them the clothes off your back and visit them in jail. Basically, help the dispossessed. " Thats why I just find it hard to square up my vision of God and what Jesus Christ said in the New Testament with what the senator is saying tonight."

1. There will always be those
who look to lead through fear and superstition.

He better damned well hope that divine retribution is all in his head because he's in a lot of trouble if he has to answer for this crap.

3. I hear ya...but he deserves this one, so what the hell.
Scarborough's like Chris Matthews. He's a dyed-in-the-wool neocon who, every once in a while, does the right thing.

5. "the signature of New Orleans is the French Quarter"
which suffered less damage than most of the rest of the city. What did God have against Beaumont, TX and Lake Charles, LA?

6. I can't hardly even spell "evolution", but I know all there is to know
The arrogance of extreme religious belief is as shocking as it is silly: limited by faith-required ignorance, these people still know everything about the entire universe.

8. A friend of mine and I were talking about this last night and realized
that - yes, this may indeed be God's wrath. Against a slew of red states. Maybe God is showing His displeasure over last November's election results?

9. The "gay parts" of Louisiana were the only ones NOT flooded.
It did, however, destroy the Confederate Library and Senator Trent Lott's house, as well as a whole bunch of (mostly baptist) churches.

11. And most of those who died...
... were the infirm, the elderly, and the children. Either God has piss poor aim or his rage is so indiscriminate that it's a wonder why anyone would choose to worship a deity capable of such wholesale suffering and murder.

Gay folks loving each other = evil
God laying waste to entire cities and murdering thousands of innocents = righteous justice

Go figure.

12. I'm kinda atheistic these days
but one of my favorite parts of the bible is the sermon on the mount, where Jesus warns us about assholes like this guy.
