DLC voted differently on Roberts
Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 11:22 PM by Don1
The Senate confirmed Roberts as Supreme Court Justice on 9/29/2005. There were 78 votes in favor and 22 opposed.

The Democratic Party was split over the vote. There are 44 Democrats in the Senate, meaning 22 voted for Roberts and 22 against. Therefore, 50% of Democrats voted against him. 100% of Republicans voted for him.

However, if you break down the votes for Roberts between the DLC Democrats and the non-DLC Democrats, there is a striking difference.

9 out of 25 non-DLC Democrats voted for Roberts. That is 36%.
Meanwhile, 15 out of 19 DLC Democrats voted for Roberts. That is 68%.

It's a shame that there are so many in the Party who vote along with the Republicans. More often than not, these culprits can be found in the DLC.

As a side note, there is a very interesting coincidence when looking at these numbers. The 68% figure is actually exactly halfway between the 36% figure and the 100% figure. In other words, in this case, DLC-ers voted exactly halfway between the rest of the Democrats and Republicans. It is almost a sign, telling us that the DLC are the Republocrats.

You can see a summary of other DLC votes versus non-DLC votes here:

6. Yep
Pretty obvious statement. I still don't get why Kerry is a DLCer when he's pretty liberal/progressive. Has he always been one?

3. good analysis thanks but no surprise almost on the same results as the
link you gave.

The DLC knows what's best for your democracy, thats why they show leadership and don't council, until after they vote and explain why it's democratic.

4. Thanks.
Some people I think still do not get it. I am hoping that putting it in writing will jog something.

5. Your numbers are wrong.
The DLC website lists only 18 DLC Senators. Six of those voted no: Bayh, Cantwell, Clinton, Feinstein, Kerry and Stabenow. Thus the totals are
10 of 26 non-DLC Democrats voted for Roberts:38%
12 of 18 DLC Democrats voted for Roberts:67%

8. I disagree with the DLC's economic policies
I disagree with their unusually large dependence on corporate donors, and that goes the same for politicians in general who rely too heavily on corporate special interest money. We've got to destroy the influence special interests have on the federal government if the people are to protect themselves against fascism or "corporatism" as Mussolini defined it.

9. Sorry, just a newbie here, but
Roberts would have been confirmed regardless. Rather than punishing those who voted for Roberts, it might be better to urge ALL the Democratic Senators to filibuster the next nominee.

10. Perhaps so but...........
There has been a long running discussion here about the politics and voting records of DLC Dems versus non DLC Dems, one in which the DLC defenders often claim they get a bum rap. These DLC apologists want us to believe that the DLC members are every bit as "Democratic" as the others, while the anti-DLC crowd believes that more often than not the DLC acts as enablers for Bush admin and Repub policies by refusing to oppose them.

I think the point being made here is relevant. Oh and by the way, WELCOME TO DU!!!

12. Here's the problem.

Wouldn't you have expected a filibuster over Bolton, Rice, Gonzalez, or Roberts already?

The problem is that there is division of the vote on many issues. You will not get a filibuster because of the conservative wing of the party, most of which are in the DLC.

Welcome to DU, by the way!!
