Sen. Collins (R, ME) weak on Face the Nation.
She basically stuck to the "not the time for blame, time to come together and help people" repug talking point.

I agree that it's way past time to help people, but I'd expected a little better from her.
:-(

2. She has an odd tremor in her voice.
And just a bit of a lisp.
She always sounds on the verge of tears to me.

12. Neither can I
She speaks like there's a SEVERE synaptic breakdown between her brain and her vocal apparatus --- It could be that she consciously slows her speech process down in order to overcome a speech impediment. I do know that trying to watch her speak annoys the hell out of me, and I avoid any shows upon which I know she will appear.

19. It sounds like a breathing defect to me..
I have no scientific capacity at all, but I am a singer....and understand a bit about how the column of air that moves from our lungs upward through the system works in supporting vocal tones...she sounds like something is spasming and interrupting the air flow

24. I never thought of that.
The reason I thought it was a conscious attempt to monitor a speech impediment is because when I was young, I had a lisp. Although I overcame it with the help of a speech therapist, when I get REAL tired, I have to consciously work at speaking properly and not reverting. In fact, that could be why listening to her annoys me - it reminds me of how frustrating it is for me when I reach that point of exhaustion.

:-) I do appreciate your perspective - that one never even entered into my realm of reason....But then my musical ability is extremely limited. (As in: if it's beyond 'FACE' and 'Every good boy does fine', it's beyond me.)

5. Saw her on PBS Newshour this week that Lieberman
creature. She talks about the most devastating natural disaster in our nation's history smiling and nodding as she talks. I am not sure who she is attempting to please but I find her whole demeanor to be suspect and demeaning to all the victims of Katrina.

Lieberman is an embarrassment to Connecticut too. What a waste of breath he is - very much the Bush apologist now. He makes my skin crawl - what happened to him? Or was he always repulsive and I am just now seeing it?

20. What are the chances of unseating her?
She seems reasonable, for a Republican these days....but the sad thing is, we might have better luck unseating the "moderates"like her (Snow, Chafee, etc..) because they come from essentially blue states. What doyathink?

23. Not really sure.
Here in Maine, they like Olympia Snowe. Her position in the Senate is safe. Snowe has an independent streak that Mainers tend to like. Susan Collins however is another matter, her office is not as sure, some people tend to see her as having loyalty to the republican party and not to Maine. She was able to keep her Senate seat last election against Chellie Pingree. I am not sure what the chances are this time around, I have not really heard of anyone that has announce to run against her. There have been some murmers that House rep Tom Allen may throw his hat in but nothing certain.

30. I believe that in recent SUSA polls
Collins and Snowe were the two most popular Senators within their states. Not much chance of unseating them.

14. Does she?
She get credit for favoring Choice, but she votes for every anti-choice judge, every anti-choice appointee, and never really stands up to the republican machine. Her votes that I might approve of come when it doesn't matter how she votes.

I don't give her credit for much, but crediting her ability to think is low on the list. The people of Maine had a chance to elect a real Senator and a real voice for the state, but rejecting Chellie Pingree, one awesome woman.

And that includes Repubs who claim to be "moderates". If they were true moderates they'd switch parties.

15. This is why Bush will never be impeached--if they GOP can stand
behind this incompetent even now, forget it. Apparently, they think they can spin their way out of this, in plenty of time for 2006. If they thought otherwise, they may want to jump ship.

Maybe if Fitzgerald comes down with a whole bunch of indictments that are very close to the top, then MAYBE, then, they will be ready to bail.
But since Katrina and Iraq involve only OTHER PEOPLE's misery, well, why should they care now??

16. Maybe part of the reason is that she deserves some blame as well
Don't foget which Senate Comittee she is the Chairman of:

Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee

She is the person who has been responsible for the oversight for FEMA and DHS.

18. I was just thinking
She and Lieberman both are responsible for confirming Michael Brown's appointment to FEMA as deputy director. Once it came under Homeland Security and he was named director, he never had to be confirmed again.

Su-san...Col-lins...speaks...like...

Sy...Sper-ling...

from...the...

for...men.

The cadence of her voice is that of a drunk debutante who's been waked up in the peak of her REM cycle; there's that insipid little ultra-fem lisp and the overall plodding of the multi-impaired.

Considering the oncoming rebirth of acid rain in Maine, the shitty economy and a host of other consequences of the greed-crazed monarchists, she should be on very thin ice...

21. Is she the one who's supposedly really unintelligent?
And I don't mean in terms of being a Republican. I mean she's an airhead.

I know it's either Snowe or Collins; I can't remember which one.

22. She's never shown me any intelligence
Snowe, at least, is able to think and speak in coherent sentences. Susie comes across as an idiot and an embarrassment. Hey, sorta like her hero in the White House.

We tried really hard to unseat her in 2002. I don't understand the people of Maine who voted to keep her around and, basically, hand her the keys to an office in Washington for as long as she wants it. HOWEVER (and I'll believe this when I see it) she did say that she'd only serve two terms.

25. Maine accent
I've actually heard other women in Maine who sound a lot like her. Maine is quite isolated - it makes sense that the people there - especially in the rural areas - would sound a little different from most Americans.

26. Note: from a rural Maine woman
I have rocks in my backyard smarter than Susan Collins.

Her lack of intelligence has nothing to do with her birth place, just her feeble ability to think.

27. I wasn't criticizing her intelligence
Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I was saying that I've heard others from Maine who have the same didactic style of speaking. It has nothing to do with intelligence or lack thereof.

28. I know of no one in Maine who sounds like she does
Having lived in Maine almost all my life (so far) I've heard lots of Maine accents. Susie's isn't one of 'em.

I have no idea where her accent came from. It's certainly not indicative of Aroostook County where she's from.
