I just read The Declaration of Independence
here,
http://usinfo.state.gov/usa/infousa/facts/funddocs/deceng.htm

I've got to say, some of the parallels are striking. Such a wonderfully written document. If you haven't lately, give it a read, and share your thoughts.

1. My husband gave me a book at Christmas that contains the Declaration
The Constitution, and the Amendments. I keep it next to my favorite relaxing spot, and use it both for reference, when I hear someone bring up a particular article, or when I just want to check something out for myself.

2. I visited the Nat'l Archives a few weeks ago..
and took a look at the big three enshrined there. It's very moving and really inspirational to see them there. The actual documents, right there in front of you, powerful. Then I think what's going on a few blocks away and I feel so ashamed of what they've done.

3. Study and discussion of both the Declaration and the US constitution
is part of every course I teach (history -- easy to work them in!). I like to juxtapose Jefferson's original draft with the final version. Still beautiful, powerful, and angry in the end -- but, boy, were there differences!

4. When I was still teaching....
I made my students read it & then becasue most of them never bothered to do any of the reading I assigned, I would read it to them. For most, it was the first time they had read it or heard it.
