Bob Sheiffer Blasts the response to Katrina

SCHIEFFER: Finally, a personal thought. We have come through what may have been one of the worst weeks in America's history, a week in which government at every level failed the people it was created to serve. There is no purpose for government except to improve the lives of its citizens. Yet as scenes of horror that seemed to be coming from some Third World country flashed before us, official Washington was like a dog watching television. It saw the lights and images, but did not seem to comprehend their meaning or see any link to reality.

Video-WMP

As the floodwaters rose, local officials in New Orleans ordered the city evacuated. They might as well have told their citizens to fly to the moon. How do you evacuate when you don't have a car? No hint of intelligent design in any of this. This was just survival of the richest." (hat tip BJ for the transcript)

Bob tells it like it is. He's been really railing against what he perceives to be problems within the government of late.

1. Too bad he didn't say this before the third debate.
Better late than never.

5. Just About the Last Remaining Great "Cronkite-like" Writer/Broadcasters
Bob Schieffer is a great writer and speaker, and has described the structural changes of the Presidential primary system over the years and why Democrats may be having problems with candidates, talking very favorably, for example, about being on the campaign trail with Lyndon Johnson, a great campaigner and President--only FDR did more to alleviate poverty than Johnson. Schieffer is a Democrat (told an audience questioner that, on C-SPAN, to great applause), a really fun speaker to listen to (C-SPAN), with a deep and long-range perspective, and was also great on a panel a while ago on the anniversary of Watergate, when Woodward and Bernstein donated their papers to the Univ. of Texas I think it was. Listen to Schieffer actually talk, and it is really great.

6. But he's also a Bush friend
The third debate had no questions on environment or energy policy - both Kerry strengths and Bush weaknesses - but he had questions on "are people born gay - even though that's a question for scientists, abortion (again), and on the fact that he, Bush and Kerry each had 2 daughters!

Replace the stupid gay question with one on energy and Kerry's answer from his rallies is stunning - funding research in new technology - that some country will develop- gives us the good job, helps the energy problem and helps the environment.

7. Read again----it sounds to me like he is blaming the local officials
The floodwaters didn't rise until after the levees broke and long after FEMA was supposed to be in charge.

He's a Bush crony from way back.

9. Read the whole thing or watch the video. He says WASHINGTON
He says "Official Washington coming off an 5 week vacation stupor" and compares them to a dog watching tv.

He's hardly a Bush crony.
