These people at free republic are parasitical losers, who really can't make it in mainstream society. They need two things to feel big about themselves: 1) mindless attachment to an authority (hence their mindless attachment to political authority) and 2) someone to "look down on". I know guys like this who use religion as a way of compensating for their feelings of inadequacy. I actually think it is a form of arrested development - this is obvious in their inability to have any empathy for people who are suffering and dying. For most of them, it is plain stupidity that keeps them from being able to think for themselves or to transition into adulthood. They all know this - that they are losers - and that nothing will ever come of them.
