Bush’s approval rating falls to new low
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 10:42 AM by Lochloosa
53 percent say they disapprove of president in new Post-ABC survey

By Richard Morin and Dan Balz

Updated: 12:02 a.m. ET Aug. 31, 2005
Rising gas prices and ongoing bloodshed in Iraq continue to take their toll on President Bush, whose standing with the public has sunk to an all-time low, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The survey found Bush's job approval rating at 45 percent, down seven points since January and the lowest ever recorded for the president in Post-ABC surveys. Fifty-three percent disapproved of the job Bush is doing.

BUT HERE IS WHAT OUR DEMOCRATIC LEADERS:sarcasm:SHOULD BE PAYING ATTENTION TO:

The survey also provided bad news for Democratic leaders, who are judged as offering Bush only tepid opposition. :banghead:Slightly more than half of those surveyed expressed dissatisfaction with congressional Democrats for not opposing Bush more aggressively.

Self-identified Democrats were particularly impatient. More than three in four said congressional Democrats have not gone far enough to oppose Bush on Iraq or on administration policies in general.

2. After the NO disaster and legalized gasoline price gouging
over Labor Day weekend, check the polls next week. The bottom will fall out completely this time. Maybe and hopefully permanently.

4. RE: Bush's Approval
Exellent post! I agree. This is where being republcrat will further damange the Democrats. As long as the DLC is running the show I feel they will miss this opportunity to seize this as an issue and platform with momentum. So close to Corporate lobbiests, so far from the American working people.

5. But, Dems Need To Put Out A Plan Of Their Own, LOUDLY!
Great that Bush in falling in the polls like a ton of bricks out a tenth-story window, but polls also show that the general public has equally as little confidence in Congressional Dems as they do in Bush and Congressional R's. All wings of the party need to get the hell together, lay out an angenda for the ordinary folks all over this country who are getting royally screwed by the GOP be they D's, I's, or even R's, and offer a compelling alternative plan with big, bold new ideas based on American values (i.e. smarter national security, rewarding work with decent wages and benefits, real healthcare reform, fiscal responsibility, tax fairness, guaranteed retirement security, listening to science instead of ideology on matters concerning global warming, stem cells, etc., more campaign finance reform, election reform, energy reform and independence, preserving the environment for posterity and today's outdoorspeople, inclusion instead of division, taking on the problem of poverty, expanding the middle class, government ethics, being the party of the people vs. the party of corporations, etc. etc. etc.) The issues are on our side, and the public, I think, is ready for a new era of pro-working-America economic populism and national unity. What we need is the party and political leadership and PLAn, RIGHT NOW, to get it done!

6. Wimpy Effing Dems
This war should be the death of the DLC just as Vietnam created the (then-labeled) New Left in reaction against Truman-Johnson style foreign policy.* Where are our leaders? Mr. Conyers just doesn't have the proper stage presence, you know?

Bush's problems may be more about gas prices than Iraq. That's what those swing voters pay attention to. Gas comes down, Bush goes up. Gas goes up, Bush comes down. See the Pollkatz graph at the bottom of my post.

*Have you heard that recorded phone call between Harry and Lyndon? "Force is the only thing they understand" Truman said of the Viet Cong. (Truman was beaten as a child, and proud of it. )

7. Up, up and away with the disaster
He'll be up to 50%+ by this time next week with the photo ops Rove will arrange at the hurricane sites. Right now AFI is doing a dramatic flyover of the region. Bush is probably napping, but the cable networks will be showing tape at 4, 5, 6,......

9. That's what I was thinking
I thought his approval ratings were in the 30s, 36%, the last I saw. They should be in the 20s by now.

And I haven't heard a word from the Democrats ~ where was the NG and the military when this disaster happened? In Iraq, that's where! Bush has left this country totally vulnerable. This should show those who think that 'fighting them over there etc. etc.' is pure BS.

Even Daryn Kagen (sp?) Rush's girlfriend, aske the representative from the Army Corps of Engineers why it took so long for them to get involved. He stammered at first, and I got the feeling he didn't want to say 'because we didn't get orders until now'.

One MSM reporter said last night that 'President Bush asked us to pray, yesterday, but today it's obvious we need a more hands-on approach'. Why weren't Democrats pressuring him to take some action instead of strumming guitars in California? Sometimes I really wonder what is wrong with them. Someone needs to take care of the American people's needs at a time like this. Watching the coverage, it looks like they're pretty much on their own, except for a small contingency of NG and the Coastguard.

11. As Gary Hart said we only need ONE
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 12:18 PM by underpants
ONE Dem to stand up and call bulls**t on the whole Bush administration the whole damned thing. Gov.Mark Warner (not running for Va. Senate seat in '06) could make his mark right now by doing that. Old timers with nothing to fear (Byrd, Carter (YES!) ) could do that too.

Look at what happened when someone finally stood up in public and decried the war and every W........his name was/is Howard Dean and suddenly (it was noticeable) everyone saw that it was okay to criticise W and the floodgates opened.

ONE that's all we need ONE.

ON EDIT-"Floodgates" wasn't the best choice there. Sorry I was caught up in the moment.

10. It's the machines! It's the machines!
The election machines. That's why the polls aren't having much affect. You need to make Diebold, ESS and Triad happy, not the polls.
