New ARG Poll: Chimpy In FREE FALL (Approve 36%, Disapprove 58%)
George W. Bush's Job Approval Ratings Drop

George W. Bush's overall job approval ratings have dropped from a month ago even as Americans who approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president are turning more optimistic about their personal financial situations according to the latest survey from the American Research Group. Among all Americans, 36% approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president and 58% disapprove. When it comes to Bush's handling of the economy, 33% approve and 62% disapprove.

Among Americans registered to vote, 38% approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president and 56% disapprove, and 36% approve of the way Bush is handling the economy and 60% disapprove.

This is the second month in a row when improving economic ratings have not been matched by higher job approval ratings for Bush. A total of 24% of Americans now say their personal financial situations are getting better, up from 17% in July, and 27% say they believe that their personal financial situations will be better off a year from now, which is up from 21% in July.

The increases in the personal financial ratings, however, are coming mainly from those approving of the way Bush is handling his job. A total of 54% of those approving the way Bush is handling his job say their personal financial situations are getting better, compared to 5% of those saying they disapprove of the way Bush is handling his job, and 61% of those saying they approve of the way Bush is handling his job say they expect to be better off a year from now, compared to 6% of those saying they disapprove of the way Bush is handling his job.

1. Extreme borrowing against the future doesn't ensure that
people will feel flush today, except for a minority of dopes who don't understand how far in debt * has driven us. Reagan's strategy was foolish in the 80s and it's foolish today.

2. wait until all those who are satisfied with their personal financial...
...situation get hit with higher payments and interest rates for their credit card debt in a couple of months. Can you say "lead balloon?"

3. I didn't realize Halliburton and the other war profiteers . . .
I didn't realize Halliburton and the other war profiteers had such large payrolls. Out of the anemic 36% of approvers of the Bush regime, 54% say their personal finances are getting better.

Which leaves the question of why out of the 46% of Bush backers whose personal financial situation isn't improving, why in the world they think Bush is doing a good job, or what they think he's going to do that will suddenly benefit them.

Is that record low approval rating of any president? Did Nixon ever go that low. Can we let Bush stay in Crawford and get a new president???

5. I think other posts in the past have shown Truman, Carter,
Nixon, Johnson (maybe others) slipped into the 20s.

7. Nixon et al didn't have the MSM bullhorn united behind them
Frankly the only reason you don't see *'s numbers in the teens is the constant support he gets (and attacks on his foes) from the MSM.

14. Bingo - the power of propaganda.
I do think it's encouraging that the non-stop propaganda isn't doing a better job.

6. I'm Not Sure, I Think Nixon Was Lower, But Honestly, I Didn't Think It
Would ever go this low. I think we are just about at his looney base level here and may not be able to go much lower, though, I could be wrong, and I hope I am.

13. 2nd ID lost 8000 men in one campaign.
Of course, the Chinese took ten times that many casualties, but 8000 men is a lot of people to lose in a few weeks' time.

10. We are finally here! I predict most other polls will echo this in a few...
...weeks. Bush has finally "reached his base" (although by "reaching his base" I don't think he ever thought it would mean his poll numbers falling to ONLY his base).

Appealing to your base is smart, but it doesn't help if it's ALL you have.

Bush always has been and always will be a president with strong support of 30-percent of the nation. They're the "30-percenters": they will believe anything he says, go along with anything he says, and do anything he says (largely because he 'says" he's a "Man of God").

Now, finally (inevitably, considering the things he has done), he has lost virtually everyone except for the "30-percenters".

Below forty is very very low! So when will the Dems get the backbone to start referring to him as the unpolular president?

22. One thing bothering me about "the polls"
In fact, it was pointed out here at DU sometime today. The people may be fed up to the butt with Bush BUT they rate the Dems even lower than Bush on their approval scale. Unfortunately, that means that if there was an election right here and now, the goddamn repubs would still wipe our ass and the half-wit would be back in the White House. This is something the Democrats either cannot get through their heads or they don't want to. They have an opportunity to blaze a trail. Those who don't, I say, are up to their asses in corruption with their republican brothers! It would be interesting if a Russ Finegold or some such person starts to "catch on". Then you would see these enabling bastards start to spruce up their "liberal" image. I'd love to celebrate with these polls. But that underlying fact makes me so depressed.
