John Edwards (NC) on Judge John G. Roberts...
Bush's nominee for the Supreme Court.

From USA Today:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2005-07-29-dems-roberts_x.htm

But a review of paperwork that Roberts drafted while he worked in the Reagan administration shows a "very different young lawyer at work, a partisan for conservative causes," said Edwards.

Edwards, a former North Carolina senator, voted to confirm Roberts' earlier nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia when he was a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee two years ago.

"Someone who opposed efforts to remedy discrimination on the basis of sex and race," Edwards said in his prepared remarks. "Someone who opposed measures to protect voting rights ... The question now is, who is the real Judge Roberts?"

5. He had to choose between Pres. or senate race....
he won 51-52% of the vote in 1998... the lewinsky year, in a red state.

2. Why would Edwards vote to confirm him?
His comments make no sense.

4. Actually, Edwards makes perfect sense on this....
At the time, roberts was being nominated to be the judge... where he can only apply the law... as a justice, he can judge the constitutionality of the law... there is a big difference! Plus, when Roberts came before the committee for the circuit court nomination... the only thing he was being judged upon was his work as a lawyer... now his memos and legal work for the government is coming out and Edwards even pointed to a few rulings Roberts made as a judge that are troublesome.

These are two drastically different posts... and each has its unique requirements... Edwards gets it.

6. John Edwards voted to confirm Roberts for the Appeals Court,
when less was known about Roberts and the stakes weren't as high.

Edwards is retired from the Seante, and implying Senators shouldn't vote for Roberts for the Supreme Court.

3. The pundits have been using Edwards' vote for Roberts to claim moderation
My guess is that most of the media won't report that Edwards is speaking out now BECAUSE he has new information after studying files he didn't see before - instead they'll charge him with grandstanding, positioning, flip-flopping, etc....all the crap they reserve for Democrats to discredit their view.
