National security and our industrial base in a post-9/11 world.
Okay, say we have a repeat of an event on the scale of those of 9/11 or are on the receiving end of a "nuculear" attack from one of those nations the * junta has po'd. Said event shuts destroys a significant chunk of our current infrastructure. Given that we've not given the rest of the world any incentives to be our allies and the fact that our business community has either hocked our industrial base off to the highest bidder or taken it elsewhere, how compromised are we? We no longer produce steel--an essential building material. We've decimated our passenger rail system and the airlines are a joke even when they are running. We don't produce much of anything that is a real product anymore, except hamburgers. How do we rebuild our nation then? Or, would such an event turn out to be a catalyst for returning to a modicum of self-sufficiency? I think this concept of global economy was meant to weaken the nation state and make it subservient to the corporations. I'm not sure exactly how to articulate my questions fully in this area? Do we plunge ahead on a global scale and give ourselves up as corporate cogs and make our role out to be exclusively that of consumer? As a nation, we are definitely compromised in terms of security now in this economic climate. Should there be success in undermining the role of the UN as an arbiter for nation states, what becomes the next phase of globalization? Help me out here, cause I'm struggling with this. Has this all arisen from a zeitgeist, as I've heard various movements in history attributed to, or is this by design?
