Although some people here may find it disconcerting, Christian fundamentalists should have the right to call homosexuality a sin and lobby against gay rights. Their freedom of speech should not be contingent on my agreement with their position on any given issue, or the agreement of anybody else.

The definition of terrorism in the Patriot is so broad that this just may have merit.

Personally, I would never use the Patriot Act that way, even if I had the power to do so. However, the whole point of having a Bill of Rights is that we should never trust those who govern us with that kind of power. That is why most of the Patriot Act needs to be repealed.

I don't care if fundamentalists think homosexuality is a sin; but their rationale is pure unadulterated hogwash to be fed to the foot soldiers who will go forth and hate with gusto. That's why american family radio exists; To stir up the ignorant.

While whining about how someone else might use a law, the zealots march right on supporting constitutional amendments and activist judges which/who would take away constitutional liberties from law abiding, tax paying American Citizens. And such actions would have narry an effect on them personally. They are so ignorant they do not appreciate the constitution or the bill of rights or the declaration of independence. Their law is the bible and they want to make it your law as well.

20. Let me take one small exception to that

I would allow US foreign intelligence agencies to share information with the FBI or state/local authorities if their investigations overlap. When dealing with terrorists anchored in South Asia with sleeper cells in Europe and the US, that makes good sense. This can be done without violating anybody's rights.

The rest of the Patriot Act is a wholesale assault on the Bill of Rights and has no place in American law.

to tax churchs they don't like out of existence if they get political power.

I have also heard it argued that Liberals/progressives will use hate speech laws to silence preachers that don't preach positive messages about abortion of homosexuality.

And lately the argument that liberals will use eminent domain laws to take away church property of churchs they deem offensive.

Don't laugh it is out there.


They believe the Democrats are at best a-religious and at worst anti-religion and would love to use state power to perpetuate their view of religion or better yet get rid of it all together and promote only a secular view of society.

Actually, I did have a "thought exercise" about that.

Not in dealing with Christianity per se but The Vatican.

1) The Vatican is a foreign power.
2) The Vatican seeks to influence our domestic policies and elections by:
a) Extorting politicians with financial and "spiritual" extortion, even threatening to withhold Communion if a politician doesn't vote in line with The Poop's dogma
b) Interfering with the legitimate electoral process by similarly intimidating voters to swing elections

That would make The Vatican a rogue nation, The Catholic Church a terrorist organization, and Catholics would be Enemy Combatants.

Granted, I neither believe any of this to be true, nor do I advocate this policy. But I hope that this is a real enough possibility to scare some into realizing that:

1) The Patriot Act is bad.
2) Religious organizations meddling in secular politics is bad.
3) The Wall Between Church and State is good.
