Yeah, of COURSE, Roberts is a distraction from Plamegate, but it works just as well for * the other way: Slip in a certified wingnut while everyone is distracted by Plamegate.
The way we get fucked is if we buy into this "we have to chose our battle" logic. Obviously, some Dems are going to put more priority on one issue over the other. So be it, but this thing about trying to get EVERYONE behind one or the other is doomed to failure -- ain't happenin'. If we can't fight both these battles simultaneously, without fighting amongst ourselves, we're fucked.
