LONDON BOMBINGS: BUSH HAS CREATED OUR WORSE NIGHTMARE
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 02:38 PM by ulTRAX
If anyone was the wrong person to fight the war on terrorism it was Bush. Backed by his gang of neocon militarist thugs they know only one course of action... to play the ugly American role to the max.

There's a fundamental truth that Bush fails to grasp. It's not WMDs that kill. It's the will to use them. As 911 proved... traditional WMDs aren't even needed if that will is strong enough. Airplanes will do.

Bush fights this war with stated two assumptions... both wrong. He fights as if there were a set number of terrorists. Kill one and there's one less. In reality the real war has to be against the DYNAMIC that encourages ordinary people to become terrorists. In this regard Bush has inflamed the Arab/Muslim world. It doesn't matter if many are grateful for deposing Saddam or that the vast majority will never become terrorists. If there's a pool of a billion people, all it takes is an infinitely small percentage to swell the ranks of a small organization such as Al Quida. Bush needed to calm the passions in the Mideast. He needed to put Sharon on a chokechain to force concessions. He needed to show some recognition that because of oil, the US's interventions in that region caused us to act in despicable ways. Bush is morally and intellectually capable of doing neither.

Bush fights this war with the assumption that it's poverty and oppression in the Mideast that are the root causes of terrorism. But as we've seen with many of the 911 highjackers and those suspected of the London bombings.... this need not be the case. Many were educated... and those in the UK were not living under a dictatorship.

Bush's two miscalculations can combine to create our worst nightmare... that solid citizens here in the UK or US might be pushed over the edge and buy into Al Quida's philosophy of terror. These people can live amongst us and operate under the radar. What will the nutcase Right then say the answer is... the PATRIOT Act 2? 3?

A police state?

1. I agree
I'm tired of hearing the idea that poverty and hopelessness is the cause of terrorism. Most Americans are so daft, they just don't understand nor do they really want to.

4. religion is also a factor.....
Religion is a key factor but stripping away the mantel of God, just what is religion? Religion is just another self-justifying belief system that does not self-correct. Those stuck in such belief systems deprive themselves of the intellectual tools to disprove that system.

Once someone is trapped in such a secular or religious belief system... they live as intellectual automatons. It's almost the luck of the dice whether they are harmless or become extremists. That can take the form of Jim Jone's cool-aid drinkers, Bin Laden's terrorists, or Bush's neocon militarists.

2. The neocons CREATED The War on Terror
for their own purposes. They are pushing a "generational war" (Condi Rice's phrase, and as foreshadowed in the PNAC documents) so it's in their best interests if terror increases (whether directly or indirectly caused by their policies).

7. there had to be SOME response to 911
It's just unfortunate that political leaders of both major parties in the US are so defiantly clueless about the effects of our own policies. Even if we had an enlightened leader, the Right in the US would vilify anyone trying to make amends with those our policies have harmed. Yet without some sort of reconciliation... we can't pull the rug out from beneath the Muslim extremists.

13. I agree in one sense
I personally think that 9/11 could have been prevented and the Taliban dealt with in another way.

But if we take 9/11 at face value (i.e. the official version), then, yes, helping the Northern Alliance to displace the Taliban was the right thing to do. But letting Bin Laden get away was wrong and diverting resources to preparing the Iraq War was wrong too, partcularly as Afghanistan hadn't been sufficiently stabilised and is now reverting back to its previous chaotic state (in fact possibly worse due to increased heroin cultivation).

3. I also agree but Blair is just as culpable. A pox on
them both for creating more terrorists.

I don't think Blair would have become involved in Iraq except for Bush.

8. You're right about Blair; I too doubt he'd have started a war,
but his involvement in the DSM doesn't help his credibility.

14. The ironic thing
is that Bush and the neocons are probably the only ones who would have invaded Iraq, but they are the also the only ones who can't make it work. It will take some-one else like Wesley Clark to make it work, or at least cut our losses.

16. do you disagree?
Just because some nuts on the Right use that phrase doesn't mean it's not true.

Some allies have WMDs and we trust they have no intent to use them against us.

perhaps the original poster meant to type "worst nightmare."

Might be good to edit in a correction to make things look nice.

17. You're right. Notice, there are no big
mysteries in London right now. No unanswered questions. They all know the reason for the bombings. It was the illegal war in Iraq.

19. It was all a masquerade. None of his ostensible motives were his true ones
There clearly have been ulterior motives from day one. They are the heart of the matter.
