Bush is still my president
Even though I didn't vote for him....

I am disappointed that he feels that my opinions are not worth listening too or that if I disagree with him, I have no voice.....

But I refuse to follow the line of reasoning some Republicans took by calling Clinton your president, not mine....

Like it or not, he is the president and will be until January 2009. (Of course there is that impeachment thing that keeps bubbling below the surface.) And Unless something dreadfull, such as his death should occur, I will still hold respect for the office even though I hold the man sitting there, as he does me, in total and utter contempt......

So even though he embarassess me to no end, And I am embarassed that he is the face of our country to the world, he is still the president of the United States........

I refuse to stoop to the level of the Right Wing fanatics who never accepted that William Jefferson Clinton was the president for all Americans

And (I hope) I understand the intangible underlying point
you are expressing with this post.

You actually THINK about things;
your opinions are arrived at by a long process of careful consideration,
and, once declared, not quickly altered.

I understand why many here will call you "Freeper";
And I understand why they are INCORRECT.

Stay the COURSE, WCGreen...
Endeavor to Persevere,
and let lesser folks "Look to Windward".

56. He is our president the same way we think Germans should own Hitler
if they were alive at that time, even if they didn't support him.

WC's original post smacked too much of a kind of mystical respect for authority for it's own sake, and again, that's inappropriate in a democracy. I respect presidents who do a good job, but I don't expect them to be role models or bodily ascend to heaven.

I think the real issue here is right wing fear of impeachment. They feel it looming and they know they have lost all their followers except the religious right and paranoid schizophrenics. Even the Gordon Geckos are starting to jump ship.

How do you defend someone so clearly, indefensible? Invoke respect for the office, the same way Bush himself uses the flag and the troops to shield himself from criticism.

People here aren't that stupid.

80. CLOSE, but not quite...and HISTORY will disregard the "NOT QUITE" part...
We OWN bush as much as we don't OPPOSE him.

The average German didn't get all excited for Hitler;
they just tried to go about their lives while the FANATICS
turned the awesome POWER of a "World Power" into channels
which had been mapped out during the Dark Ages.

WE "AMERICANS" are guilty of the same offense.

Computers, moon-missions, cable TV and the "internets"
let us feel so gratifyingly "MODERN"...

But we all stood by silently while the ONLY superpower,
the almighty USA,
was STOLEN by the forces of FASCIST-STYLE GREED.

B*sh's first term clearly showed that his goals
were in diametric opposition to the first 10 amendments
of our HIGHEST LAW (the Constitution)

100 years from now, HISTORIANS are gonna ask:
"WHY didn't U.S. citizens take to the streets with guns
when the 2004 election was so obviously CROOKED?"

But you and I will be dead by then, and unable to answer such simple questions.

We will be on the outskirts of HELL;
lounging in uncomfortable chairs
in the infinitely-large "Richard M. Nixon Memorial Foyer"
and shrugging our shoulders alongside
those nice GERMAN folks who didn't say a word
when all their neigbors disappeared.

WE OWN B*SH TO THE EXTENT THAT WE DO NOT FIGHT HIM!!!

Sorry 'yrbud', but we obviously ARE "that stupid", because we sat on our fat asses and let it happen TWICE!

69. Not really...
...the rules of the "Game" are enforced in so much as its backed up with brute force and coercion. For the most part what the president does has little effect on my day to day life, or my activities to better express my desires, politically and otherwise. I don't have any delusion that my vote of no confidence in the powers that be is somehow going to send them pummeting downward. But I'm not pessimistic enough to believe that their almighty overlords of power. I keep abreast of whats going on, but for the most part concern myself with getting stuff done locally.

21. Problem is, he wasn't elected, so he is illegally occupying the
White House. That does not make him a president, it makes him a dictator, put in place by a coup. First time, it was a judicial coup, this time it was a massive fraud coup, but nonetheless, he is not legally the president of anything.

We are not bound by anything he says or does, but of course, since he also controls the military and the courts, we more or less have to go along with the asshole for now.

I have strong personal views that are very liberal....

I fully support a progressive tax system, even though I am an accountant.....

I marched in every prewar protest I could....

I donate money and time to democratic candidates and causes.....

I certainly don't support Bush as a candidate or for that matter, any republican.....

The president is an elected official, not a king or a pope. That servile stuff is inappropriate in a democracy.

As an American citizen, you have the right to criticize him just as righties did Clinton. Most of us here quarrel with Clinton critics because they chased phantoms in his personal life rather than dispute policies.

rather I was making a point about speaking your mind and not repeating what has already been repeated before in opinion. It does take balls to just say you aren't following everyone else, even if you have the same standards and/or political belief. Thats the point. No flame or digging here. 32. I think that was a cool post.....
I try to think of Bush as my president, but the right doesn't make it easy. There is a real tendency on the part of Republicans to dismiss liberals as not being their fellow Americans. On the Coffeerooms politics board I was just told--twice--that I am not an American. There is so much hatred on the right that it is hard to embrace a GOP president.

at this point in time, just like he was the 'acting' carrier pilot when he declared his victory in Iraq.

I do not find my attitude towards him to be remotely comparable to the RW attitude towards Clinton. They didn't hate Clinton for anything that he'd done, they hated him for what he was; a Democrat who defeated an incumbent Republican. I hate Bush for what he's done.

I was willing to give him a chance when he first became President, despite his obvious theft of the election. I was never going to like him, but I might have been able to at least tolerate him, if he hadn't done all of the horrible, criminal things that he's done (and please don't try to compare them to getting a BJ in the Oval Office and then not being completely upfront about it).

The fact is that the Bush presidency has never been truly legitimate. He very clearly stole it in 2000, so he was definitely illegitimate in his first term. There were enough irregularities in 2004 to at least make his "win" highly suspect, so I still can't look on him as being the legitimate President of this country.

So, I'm happy for you that you have a President and I wish I did. But please do not compare my view to how the Republicans viewed Clinton. I would respect a legitimately elected Republican who was not an absolutely brazen criminal, and would call him my President. The Republicans wouldn't do that for a Democrat, even if it was Jesus Christ holding the office.

I do respect the office, which makes it that much worse to have someone like Bush shitting all over it.

67. I've thought about that, but...
Clinton was willing to be everyone's president. Not Bush. He's chosen not to be my president. His administration has made the choice only to govern to their base. They made the choice to have fake townhall meetings and never give a moment to the honest concerns of half the citzens of this country. They made the choice to use their majority to try to handcuff the other side to the point that our representation in congress means nothing. They decided that winning means crushing all honest opposition and stifling expression of same. As far as I'm concerned, Bush chose not to be my president and he's not.

72. Ok, WC ... explain this..
~~~You state that you didn't vote for the guy.
~~~You say that you're embarrassed by the guy.

Then you add a post saying that it took a post like this to...

..."realize you were here"

Answer me this -

You're a person who is embarrassed Bush is the president and who didn't vote for him.

Why the "realize I was here" bit?

Explain what you mean.

76. People to realize I was here....
I hardly ever get any kind of feedback from what I post.....

I served as the elected treasurer of the Cuyahoga County Democratic party for Eight years. Did that without pay....

I also served on the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections in the late 90's....

I was out among the regular people, running for office BTW, the one's who also took offense when right wingers would claim that Clinton was not their president....

I say this from decades of experience out among the voters and general public, saying things like he is not my president may get you attention but it sure won't gather any support for those among us who have a whole lot or respect for the institutions of our great country......

I am so glad you are quick to judge....

You know nothing about me.......

And yet because I take a stance that is contrary to what you might believe, I am automatically a "Freeper" in disguise......

I am so glad you feel so strongly that you have to defend and denegrade anyone, with scathing personal insult, I might add, who varies slightly from the party line.....

And thanks so much for that nice little warning....

93. I Respect and Honor the Office of the Presidency
Edited on Thu Jul-07-05 04:19 AM by tmorelli415
To that end, I respect and honor the individual who holds that office. That doesn't mean, however, that I respect the individual personally or politically. I think it is our duty to expect the President to live up to the integrity and humility of office itself.

Bush is our president, but in return he owes it to us to be the president of all Americans, and not just the president of a few of us - he clearly doesn't see it that way.

The office of the presidency is not the personal tool of the occupant to expend 'political capital' - it belongs to all of us.

The president swears to uphold the Constitution, not to be morally sinless in the Eyes of God.

Clinton engaged in some conduct 'unbecoming' of the office, but he never 'abused' the office itself. Conduct unbecoming is to be human and can be forgiven. Bush's abuse of power as a means to govern violates the public trust (not to mention the law): it is dangerous, deliberate and unforgiveable.

Bush is not interested in being 'my' president - he is simply interested in being president.

97. Wow! What happened when I was out? Anyway...
Harry Truman said that no matter what, the office of the President was to be respected, and therefore so must the President. I always had the nagging thought that that was a pile of crap, especially through the Nixon years, but then they piled on Clinton.

It's not the Clinton-bashing that changed my mind, but simply the observances through aging.

We have had some pretty bad Presidents over the years, but until now only Harding has been thought to be thoroughly inept, and Nixon to have been thoroughly dishonest. We now have one who is both, an inept crook, and has none of the accomplishments of either of his ignoble predecessors.

But, this too shall pass. For the Republic to survive, we have to accept that the office is bigger than the man, and in order to do that, we have to accept the man, no matter how despicable, who is in the office.

So, yeah, as I grit my teeth and swallow the vomit, I have to say that Bush is my President. There is no alternative.

It is the curse of democracy that we have to say this, but until that little shit is out of there, he is our President.
