Bush: Gitmo Criticism 'Absurd,' allegations of "people who hate America"
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,158139,00.html

WASHINGTON — President Bush (search) on Tuesday called recent harsh criticism of detainee treatment at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, "absurd" and said many terrorists have been trained to lie to humanitarian or civil rights groups about their treatment.

"It's absurd — it's an absurd allegation," Bush said when asked what his response was to a recent Amnesty International report that called activities at the prison camp "the gulag of our time."

"The United States is a country that promotes freedom around the world. When there are accusations made about certain actions by our people, they're fully investigated in a transparent way," the president added from the White House Rose Garden.

Bush said all detainee complaints of harsh treatment have been investigated and noted that some have been trained by terror networks to lie about their conditions to gain sympathy. "It seems like to me they based some of their decisions on the word and allegations of people in detention who hate America" and who have been trained to lie, Bush said.

1. The opaqueness allows Bush to claim transparency.
That's sad, really sad. Cheney and Rice and all of them are claiming the same thing: We won't let you prove a thing through obstruction so we can claim we're sweet as roses. Despicable.

This is going way beyond any tactical GWOT considerations too.

4. Bush and Cheney are looking nuttier and nuttier like Baghdad Bob
Even school children know that there have been abuses. The FBI have documented it, the Red Cross, Amnesty Intl.

This sounds like the final denials that the ship has hit an iceberg and is sinking - it sounds like Baghdad Bob.

When will these idiots learn?
"Bush" is not "America".

Just because people hate or even disagree with Bush doesn't equate with hating or disgreeing with America.

They have no capacity to learn because they can't feel shame they have no consience..They must be restrained by force or some other way.Bush and his buddies are incorrigible..criminal and sadly charismatic talented manipulators..to a certain kind of bully and fearful and ignorant person found in our culture.

6. If I recall correctly...
many of the people who've put forth allegations of abuse were those who were released because they weren't members of al-Qaeda.

There is ample documentation available from the FBI and DoD which substantiates the claims of abuse. Bush is simply trying to duck and cover, (particular since what Amnesty Internation really did was call for a special prosecutor - or foreign nations - to investigate and indict, arrest and prosecute Bush, Cheney, Gonzales, Meyers and more) while spreading disinformation to his base. The sad part is that it's probably going to at least partially work - again.

9. Calling the report "absurd"
Well, it's certainly easier than making a detailed refutation, point-by-point, of the evidence, the photos, the eyewitnesses, the interview, and all the other material in the report.

Looks like President "hard work" is slacking off to me.

The DOD last week confirmed at least five cases of Koran abuse at Gitmo, and the DOD has confirmed cases of homicide.

Does the Pentagon hate America?

14. I find it very striking

That Bush feels that hating America is enough to discredit someone. The possibility that there could be good or honest people who hate America, and come to that the possibility that other people could think there might be such, don't appear to have occurred to him.

15. So Limbaugh, Hannity and O'Reilly are spreading these rumors?
Sorry, I couldn't resists.

Really, what is "America". Is it a piece of real estate? A scrap of multi-colored cloth?

No, it is a carefully crafted social compact, embidied in the Constitution and similar instiutions.

It is the Bush Gang and their enablers who really hate the America we are all taught to love as kids back in the day (that would be the 60s for me).

I don't mean to roam so far off topic, but as far as I'm concerned, Bush et al are the ones who "hate us for our freedoms" and seek to "destroy" American. And they're pretty much proven liars.

So, of course, they have to make those who criticize them into the America-hating liars, because while they carefully spoke about the detainees, you know that won't survive translation through the right-wing spin machine. It will come out as DU and Truthout and you and I.

I have known this for a long time, and have cried it out to Dems and journalists for almost two decades now: The GOP lie machine accueses its opposition of what it most fears exposure as.

Once you have processed that one simple theorum, translating the propaganda is as easly as running spell check.

Today's real message is, We Are The Enemy.

And there are tens of millions of RWM listeners and viewers who believe that is so.

And if that doesn't scare the hell out of you, I don't know what would.
