John R. Bolton's prospects for winning Senate approval to become U.N. ambassador have brightened as a key Democrat abandoned her plan to try blocking debate on the confirmation.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., planned to begin debate on Bolton's nomination on Wednesday, and a vote was expected by week's end. Republicans said they were confident they would prevail in a chamber they control 55-44, with a Democratic-leaning independent.

Full Story

Hmm maybe the GOP did have the votes. I wish there were some real journalist out there that could give us the full scoop on how this deal went down.

1. There's a HUGE difference between a lifetime Judiciary position ...

... and an appointment to a position in the current adminstration that expires with the administration, "serving at the pleasure of the President," if not sooner.

2. Probably has more to do with Voinovich than the filibuster.
Sounds like they might not even need the procedural moves. They seem to think they can bring it to a vote now and kick Bolton's ass.

4. We can beat Bolton on the Senate floor
the fact that "Republicans said they were confident they would prevail" is 100% meaningless.

5. The Repubs will take full advantage of the filibuster too-
they never really wanted to give it up.
