NEVER mind those Yahoo judges, what about the SUPREME COURT???
The 800 pound gorilla in this picture of judicial nominees is the Supreme Court. Don't be surprised if someone like Orrin Hatch goes sailing through, and the Court that was already awful under Warren Burger, then took a turn for the worse with Rehquist put in (and Scalia and Thomas ...) will now take a turn so bad with up to THREE W Bush creeps on there that Roe v Wade is in grave danger as is MUCH else, stuff that doesn't make the papers as much as hot button issues.

THE SUPREME COURT -- the rest of this is just shadow boxing.

And what commitment do the Repugs have not to try the 'nuclear option' whenever they want to railroad something through? They've gone back on their word before (eg the funding for No Child Left Behind, not that I would support that even WITH full financing).

Basically, nothing much good is going to come of US politics until authentic progressives are willing to DEFY the program and organize around issues and using strategies that are verboten underground.
For example, a group canvassing door-to-door, like Greenpeace or PIRG, nationally, against the Iraq War and militarism should be a no brainer, ESPECIALLY if doing so is (quietly/silently) simply 'not on the table'. As long as everyone dances to the tune of the powers that pee, golden showers is all we'll get.

2. Replacing a conservative with another conservative, not so bad.
One of the 'compromise' Dems was on NPR today (Mark Dayton? don't remember)--anyway, the interviewer asked if the reason for this compromise was the SC. Meaning, were they making sure they'd be able to filibuster an SC nominee if it came to that.

The senator said, and I guess this makes sense--that if the first one to go is Rehnquist (as we all expect), they'll put another conservative in, which isn't going to be that different than right now. The problem in his estimation is when the second or third ones go--then there will be the fight.

The seven Republicans who compromised, against the wishes of Frist, are thought to be trustworthy and supposedly will not go for the nuclear option ever. Do I trust them? I don't know.

3. Any supreme court nominees....
...that are much to the right of the ones they're replacing should be fought through whatever means are necessary. An extraordinary circumstance would be, for instance, Bush nominating Bork again, or Ashcroft. Bush does NOT have a mandate to push the court further right, but neither do we have a mandate to push it further left.

The Supreme Court does NOT need wingnuts!
