Congressman Slams Maher Over Army Remark
WASHINGTON - A congressman says comedian Bill Maher's comment that the U.S. military has already recruited all the "low-lying fruit" is possibly treasonous and at least grounds to cancel the show.

Rep. Spencer Bachus (news, bio, voting record), R-Ala., takes issue with remarks on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, first aired May 13, in which Maher points out the Army missed its recruiting goal by 42 percent in April.

"More people joined the Michael Jackson fan club," Maher said. "We've done picked all the low-lying Lynndie England fruit, and now we need warm bodies."

--clip--

"I think it borders on treason," Bachus said. "In treason, one definition is to undermine the effort or national security of our country."

3. That word
gets thrown around a lot these days. What part of "freedom of speech" do these guys not understand?

I wrote to HBO and told them if they even thought about canceling that show, I'll be canceling my HBO.

6. I find that very disturbing, too. I hesitate to use it to describe
the admin's behavior leading up to the invasion of Iraq.

Maybe that is the point--to "inoculate" us so that we won't see it when it really occurs. For example, in the administration's behavior leading up to the Iraq invasion.

Hmm...

4. Well, here's a bigger portion of the "new rule" Bachus is bitching about:
And finally, New Rule: The people in America who are most in favor of the Iraq war must now go there and fight it. The Army missed its recruiting goal by 42% last month. More people joined the Michael Jackson Fan Club. "We've done picked all the low-lying Lynndie England fruit." And now we need warm bodies. We need warm bodies like Paula Abdul needs...warm bodies!

Now, last week, a Baptist minister in North Carolina told nine members of his congregation that unless they renounced their 2004 vote for John Kerry, they had to leave his church. Well, if we're that certain these days that George Bush is always that right about everything, then going to Iraq to fulfill the glorious leader's vision would seem the least one could do. And, hey, if it makes it any easier for you, just think of it as a reality show: "Fear Factor: Shitting Your Pants Edition." "Survivor: Sunni Triangle." Or maybe it's a video game, "Grand Theft Allah."

Now, I know you're thinking, but, Bill, I already do my part with the "Support Our Troops" magnet I have on my Chevy Tahoe. How much more can one man give? Well, here's an intriguing economic indicator. It's been over a year since they graduated, but neither of the Bush twins has been able to find work. Why don't they sign up? Do they hate America or just freedom in general?

7. I saw the bit, and it was hilarious, tragic, and painfully true.
I don't recall actually laughing, even if it was quite funny...

How the hell did we get to this point? (imagine a sadly shaking head icon here)

Masterful. I'd use the rofl guy, but the situation is more sad than funny.

13. More sad than funny? I've got a ribbon to fight Chicken Hawks with:

Join the fight to take yellow ribbons out of the arsenal of jingo-ista pretend patriots. Make them irrelevant by pointing out the hypocrisy of those relying on them as being equal to doing civic duty of paying attention and speaking up to power.

15. Go to the site, wax poetic, have them make up your masterpiece and
plaster your car with poetry and irony! Or, feel free to use my little chants and rants!

Sadly, for all my way with words, I have no car to decorate with my genius ;). Relying on all you other evilDUers to be my vehicle! :D

9. Intimidation and gross hostile nationalism
constitute fascism. A practicing fascist in the guise of a duly elected representative of the USA is a traitor to our ideals, our consitution and our moral fiber. Bachus is the worst kind of traitor and everyone should tell him so.

So all you crazy HBO talk show uncommedians can just stop saying that!

. . . ugh, I think I was channeling Bob Boudelang there for a minute. Then again, so is our Congress, apparently.
