A Tribute to Tom DeLay
Edited on Fri May-13-05 09:16 AM by janx
I woke up to CSPAN very early this morning, and there was some kind of D.C. shindig going on in honor of Tom Delay. The strange thing was that nobody looked very happy. They made speeches, they prayed, they had a red, white, and blue cake with hammers all over it, and all of the usual suspects were there, including Novak. Tom and his wife actually shed tears before the event was over.

Tom DeLay himself gave a speech, and I was too groggy to hear what he was saying, but most of it amounted to trashing Democrats (they are without "class," "leadership," etc. The usual stuff.).

The most interesting bit I did catch though was a line about the Dem party today...I looked for the transcript but could not find it. When he spoke, he got much cheering and laughter at all of the right spots, until he hit on this particular line. He said, "The Democratic party used to be the party of FDR, <...>, and Kennedy. Now it's the party of Howard Dean."

You could have heard a PIN DROP. You could have heard the footsteps of a cockroach on the Hammer's pantleg. He waited for the laughter and applause, and it never came. I actually saw one woman with her mouth open. There was a little nervous laughter from maybe two or three people coming from the back(?) of the room. They were silent.

So for those of you who wonder why Howard Dean isn't all over the zany cable channels, why he isn't visible all the time in some kind of venue or other that people can see--RELAX. I suspect it is the fact that people *don't* know what Dean is up to that worries them.

And it should. ;-)

4. He scares you?
He is scarey in that he's a slimey politician, that's true. Does he otherwise scare you?

7. This little soiree is giving me Edgar Allan Poe flashbacks.
Specifically, The Masque Of The Red Death:

"During the course of a plague, Prince Prospero calls together his friends to come to his castle for fun and frolic until the danger of pestilence has passed. A masquerade is planned, and in typical "Poesque" fashion the great halls are described in imagery that foreshadows a horror to follow. The night of the ball comes, the guests arrive in their costumes and the festivities begin.

The gaiety is interrupted by the arrival of a guest, dressed in the garments of the grave besprinkled with the scarlet blood associated with the plague of "red death." The intruder stalks the halls until confronted by the host in (of course) the black hall. Without explanation, the host falls dead at the masquer's feet and the revelers, setting upon the intruder, find that the costume is "untenanted by any tangible form." Whereupon, the guests began to die in their tracks as they acknowledge the presence of the Red Death."

8. It was *definitely* like that!
Prayers, tears, and DeLay's desperate speech. I urge everyone to take a look. Even Phylis Schlafly was there! Ed Gillespie, Novak--the whole gamut!

Horrible music, too.

9. From the Houston Chronicle:
The organizers lined up videotaped testimonials from House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill.; Haley Barbour, the Republican governor of Mississippi; Jesse Helms, former Republican senator from North Carolina; Reps. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., Mike Pence, R-Ind., and Christopher Cox, R-Calif.; James Dobson, chairman of Focus on the Family; and Houston radio talk show host Edd Hendee.
