I'm sure you've heard this same argument by now...
Here's from a pro-Bush, pro-war young man of military age who has not volunteered for service:

How many of you support cancer research? Are you doing any actual research? Hypocrites the lot of you.

How many of you support the U.N. You do? Then I take it you plan to get a job there? Perhaps as an interpreter? No? You're all talk aren't you?

How many of you oppose the death penalty. Really? I take it that means you are studying law and plan to challenge it? No? Then what business do you have claiming your opposition?

Such is the sophisticated thinking of the left...

Here was my reply... Anybody have any better argument(s) against the cowardly speciousness?

Leave it to an embarrassed hypocritical coward to post a desperate, ridiculous analogy. No, make that a hat trick of ridiculous analogies.

There are no critical staffing levels at cancer research institutes or the United Nations. We fund those exactly according to how we wish to pay for them, and get results on timetables determined by the funding. Jobs in cancer research and at the UN are market-driven. Cancer research will not be won or lost if we have 200,000 researchers as opposed to 100,000... our progress against cancer will not have been wasted, but delayed.

On the other hand, conducting a market-driven war would be absolute insanity, especially in a time of severe budget deficits. We can't afford to make soldiering attractive, and the difference in warfare is that 200,000 could mean victory where 100,000 is a total loss. And a loss would mean a total waste of lives and investment.

You're also too stupid to realize that YOU'RE not a cancer researcher, either, and if you want to sit there and declare that not volunteering for cancer research is somehow wrong then your moral deficiencies are at least double that of the war opponent's.

actually I do medical research, I've done humanitian medical care in parts of the world he could only dream of in his worst nightmares. I pay my taxes and I probably pay a lot more than whoever this clown is. And I'm against this war and everything that this administration stands for.

Please: tell him Here's your sword. Now go be a fucking man and fall on it.

4. He's missing the point.

If he really feels that his country is in danger and NEEDS him, what does it matter if other people are researching cancer or working at the UN?

If he feels his country is at risk if this war isn't fought in Iraq, what could possibly be more important to him than defending it?

What it comes down to is that he's willing to sacrifice other men's lives, but not his own, for what he believes in. You aren't voting to send people to kill or be killed, while you watch the war on tv from your comfy chair. But he is.
