WTF? He is speaking LIVE on C-span at the HHS Medicaid & Health Information Technology Conference.

MIke Leavitt, HHS secretary, led off the Conference.

1. Gov or Sen Warner?
There's a big difference.

3. So what? I'll be dead by then, and...
everyone still alive will have a hell of a lot more to worry about than that.

When did ANY politicians EVER worry about fixing a problem 37 years away?

4. You miss the point. SS will not go "bankrupt" in 2042; it's Dubya's lie!
Edited on Mon May-02-05 03:23 PM by flpoljunkie
And Governor Warner, D-VA, who has aspirations to be the Democratic nominee, just repeated this GOP mantra.

It really makes me wonder how informed or politically astute he is.

5. That's why looking for a conservative Dem Governor from the South
to win the presidency might not be the cleverest idea. Oh, it might get us into the White House, maybe. Or he may "Humphrey" himself.

7. I'm stunned. Warner (the Gov) is a bright guy. Will have to see myself.
If he said it would 'go broke' then he's committed a fatal error. As a citizen of the great state of Virginia, I want him to worry less about presidential aspirations, which are really a 'pipe dream,' and more about getting Kaine elected governor and a bunch more Democrats in the state leg. All in all, he's done a very good job. He needs to loosen up a bit.

He would be a very good Commerce Secretary (he's awesome in business and business-government relationships) or trade representative or something where management, business knowledge and negotiation are involved.

If anyone has a correction to this, which I find hard to believe, please post it.

9. There are solvency issues if we do nothing.
That's why Democrats are offering ideas to actually fix the problem of long-term solvency like raising or eliminating the $90,000 cap on payroll taxes.

I don't know if 2042 is the year we start to run a deficit, but we will eventually.

11. CBO estimates SS will be able to pay 80% of scheduled benefits in 2052!
Dissemblig Dubya uses the least optimistic economic forecast to hawk his "crisis" in Social Security and the most optimistic to describe how well his "personal" accounts will perform.

Typical flim-flam man.

14. Higher benefits if we just leave it alone
Make it easier for people to put money in investment plans. Insure them against fraud, or even a minimum insurance like FDIC.

24. Could we use the least optimistic forecast about dimwad?
Known for the worst economic recovery?
Known as the president least liked by foreign powers?
Known as the president that really really really cared about those in need?

And people wonder why we write off the south. It's their own damned fault. Their politicians need to fight harder to educate their own people.

15. OK, Social Security needs to be fixed sooner or later
Preferably sooner.

However, there is no immediate crisis. There is time to find a good solution and no pressure to adopt Bush's bad one just to do something.

17. If you prefer 'adjusted' over 'fixed', fine
Where I grew up, they mean approximately the same thing.

In any event, we are agreed that we don't need to privatize the system.

18. Some Democrats have a real problem with the truth
because they think it will not play well with the voters who have been brainwashed by the media.

The truth is simple. It has been repeated again and again.

the SS crisis is a phony crisis. There are more urgent crisis to take care of.

Anyway, if we want to take care of it, the easiest way is to get rid of the tax cuts on the 1 % most rich people or to reestablish the inheritance tax for the VERY wealthy.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to accept for moderate Democrats because they think this means socialism, so they prefer taxing the middle class a little more (mean testing, for example).

26. Yeah, but I heard 2012 was the
year that Harmony made it's debut on this Planet..

<Snipet> <last paragraph>
"All of this is indicative of the Earth moving into an unusual state of harmony, that it will achieve in 2012 upon the December solstice. Upon this date, there may be some sort of major shift in the state of the earth's fields that will perhaps physically change the planet. If this is true it will be a momentous event, and yet the precise nature of the changes are unknown to me. I can only speculate. It could perhaps be a physically destructive event or a subtle energy field change. On appearance, the 21st of December 2012 may be (deceptively) a day just like any other. All I will offer is this: the cycles of the earth and the numbers and magnitudes associated with its form will enter into a state of harmony upon this date. And as what is harmonious is held to be good and most fitting, by its very nature it will always be preferred over that which is disharmonious, disorderly and therefore disruptive. It is therefore my personal belief that anything that does occur upon this date will be beneficial to the earth and its inhabitants."
