CT-Sen: Delauro's staff floats Lieberman challenge
by kos
Thu Apr 21st, 2005 at 12:59:47 PDT

Staffers for Rep. Rosa Delauro of Connecticut floated a possible Lieberman primary challenge at a local party event last night. Now, it may very well have been an eager staffer fantasizing about such a challenge (Delauro would become a national figure and grass- and netroots hero overnight), or it could be a something a bit more orchestrated, a trial balloon of sorts amongst the types of people whose support would be critical for such a David v. Goliath challenge.

Delauro would be a great candidate to take on Lieberman. Other possibilities are Attorney General Dick Blumenthal, who is fixated on an uphill gubernatorial challenge. Or, a favorite alternative of mine, former Republican senator Lowell Weicker -- the very guy who Lieberman ousted with a challenge from the right in 1988. He left the Republican Party and served as governor of CT as an independent. At 74, however, he may be done with politics.

1. Here's hoping.
Perhaps Connecticut has had their fill of Diamond Joe.

2. I don't see it happening. Delauro's good (she's my rep) and popular but
I don't see her beating Joe.

5. The GOP traded their OWN Senator for Liebermann
Yet we are too fucking cowardly to even take a shot at the primary.

We got Neo-conned in 1988.

The GOP lost a seat but gained a champion.

6. She seems quite good to me.
Her friends are my friends, her enemies are my enemies.

7. Weicker has said time and again he's done with politics
tempting though it may be, he's not getting back in.

I feel pessimistic about anyone's chances at this point. Lieberman seems so well-funded. As has been pointed out, the GOP in CT loves him. But Rosa is well worth supporting. I'm less enthusiastic about Blumenthal, personally.

8. Another fever dream from Markos

Markos' obsession with Lieberman has moved from the merely pathetic and into the realm of the pathological. At least he was lucid enough to post Rosa DeLauro's swift denunciation of this rumor:

"The posting on this blog is completely false. Rosa considers Senator Lieberman a dear friend and supports his re-election effort. She has no intention of running against him".

9. I felt suspicious too,
and that's why I didn't post this is in DU when I read this post in the Kos yesterday. Why trust some staffer at the JJB? I've been to one a couple of years ago and it's a just a big Dem pep rally and fundrasier.
