1. Rick Scarborough , Vision America
http://www.visionamerica.us/-about/meetva.htm

Rick Scarborough
President, National Co-Chairman
Rick Scarborough, a graduate of Houston Baptist University, has traveled extensively as an evangelist. He served as senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Pearland, Texas from 1991 until he resigned June 23, 2002, to give his full attention to Vision America. He earned his Masters degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and received a Doctorate of Ministry from Louisiana Baptist Theological Seminary.
It was through a disturbing situation involving a sex education program at his daughter's high school that Pastor Scarborough decided that "enough is enough!" He mobilized his congregation and others in the community to promote traditional Biblical values in the cultural and political arenas of Pearland, effecting dramatic and much needed changes in local policies and practices.
Out of this experience, he authored a book appropriately entitled "Enough is Enough!" which ignited interest from around the country and an opportunity for him to share the vision with pastors and laymen alike. He founded Vision America in 1998 as the motivating force to reach out across this nation to network and mobilize pastors of all denominations into the moral debates in our nation, and promote Biblical values back into every aspect of the public arena. He has been interviewed on several national programs including James Dobson's Focus on the Family, Marlin Maddoux's Point of View and Don Wildmon's American Family Radio. Salem Communications has featured his one-minute commentaries on the nationwide Network of Radio Stations.
Pastor Rick and Tommye, married in 1970, have three grown children - Richard, Misty and Kathryn, as well as two grandchildren.

2. Gary Marx , Judicial Confirmation Network - FREEPER & friend of *-Cheney
http://judicialnetwork.com/

Gary Marx
Executive Director

The executive director of the Judicial Confirmation Network (JCN) is Gary Marx. Gary came to the JCN following a stint as a coalitions organizer for the Bush-Cheney 04 national campaign. Before joining the Bush-Cheney team, Gary served as Development Director and lobbyist for The Family Foundation of Virginia. Gary is also president of Principium Consulting a public policy and public affairs consulting firm.

The Judicial Confirmation Network is an organization of citizens joined together to support the confirmation of highly qualified individuals to the Supreme Court of the United States. In addition, JCN works to ensure that the confirmation process for all judicial nominees is fair and that every nominee sent to the full Senate receives an up or down vote.

We believe that the qualifications desirable in a nominee include:

integrity
common sense
education and experience in the law; and
devotion to the Constitution
We believe that the proper role of a judge or justice is to interpret the law and the Constitution – not make up the law and deprive the people of the right to govern ourselves.

We believe that a judge or a justice should not use the power of the court to impose his or her personal or political agenda on the people.

If you would like to schedule an interview with a spokesperson from the Judicial Confirmation Network, please contact Mike Russell (ex.109) or Mark Coyle (ex. 130) at 703-683-5004.

Judicial Confirmation Network Launches Drive to End Obstructionism

JCN Joins Dozens of Citizen Groups to Push for Fair Confirmation of Judicial Nominees

Washington— In an effort to halt blatantly partisan and personal attacks on many of the President’s nominees to the Federal Courts, the Judicial Confirmation Network is circulating a national petition and is partnering with more than seventy citizen and grassroots organizations across the country calling on Senators to bring the President’s judicial nominations to the floor for respectful debate and timely votes.

"Our message is simple, the people want the Senate to do its work and our petition will remind Senators that they have an obligation to bring these nominations to the floor for a fair vote," said Gary Marx, executive director of the Judicial Confirmation Network. "The rhetoric we are already hearing from the left is divisive and unproductive to the confirmation process. The public sees through the liberal extremist groups' campaign to deny confirmation to highly qualified nominees and will hold obstructionist Senators responsible. Middle America realizes that the fear and smear tactics leveled by some groups isn’t helpful to a fair confirmation process," Marx added.

The group began distributing petitions this week via e-mail alerts to citizens and to dozens of other citizen activist organizations including Focus on the Family, Americans for Tax Reform, the Committee for Justice, Americans for Limited Government and the American Center for Law and Justice. JCN expects thousands of respondents in coming weeks. In addition, the national petition calling for an end to unconstitutional obstruction is accessible by visiting JCN’s website at: www.judicialnetwork.com

"The stunning re-election defeat of former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle was due largely to the public’s perception that Sen. Daschle was no longer willing to work in a spirit of bi-partisan cooperation with his Republican colleagues," said Marx.

"The public is well aware that some Senators are denying qualified candidates a fair vote simply because these candidates do not support their liberal ideology. People are tired of this kind of behavior in the U.S. Senate. They want their elected officials to do their jobs," Marx added.

The Judicial Conformation Network Petition follows:

A Petition Calling on United States Senators to End the Obstructionism, Do Their Duty, and Vote Up or Down on Every Judicial Nominee

Whereas, the America people have a right to expect their Senators to do the job they were sent to the Senate to do;

Whereas, the Constitution clearly places responsibility on the Senate – in its "Advice and Consent" role to vote on the President’s nominees to the judiciary;

Whereas, basic fairness demands that every nominee - who has made a commitment - in many cases a sacrifice - to serve our country and who has gone through an arduous confirmation process - receive a final vote of the full Senate;

Whereas, the American people reject the politics of personal destruction and oppose the "fear and smear" campaigns conducted by extremist groups against judicial nominees;

Whereas, the American people do not want the United States Senate bowing to the demands of extremist groups to obstruct or deny a full vote to a nominee;

Therefore, I urge you as a United States Senator to pledge to do your duty, to oppose the obstructionism, to denounce the "fear and smear" campaigns of extremist groups against nominees, and recognize the right of every nominee sent to the full Senate to receive an up or down vote.

To schedule an interview with Gary Marx of the Judicial Confirmation Network, please call Mark Coyle or Mike Russell 703-683-5004 (ex. 130 for Mark Coyle, ex. 109 for Mike Russell) (End)

Petition HERE!

Dear friend,

I write you today in the hope that you can help President Bush get his highly qualified nominees confirmed as federal judges.

My name is Gary Marx, and I run an organization called the Judicial Confirmation Network.

Last year I traveled across the country organizing citizens like you on behalf of the Bush-Cheney campaign. In every state, at every stop, I heard from people concerned about what run-a-muck judges were doing to our country. Many of them told me it was the number one reason they were voting for President Bush - because he had pledged to nominate only highly qualified individuals who knew that the proper role of a judge is to apply the law - not make up the law and impose his or her own political agenda on the people. When judges do that, they are disenfranchising all voters and robbing the people of the right to self government.

There was also great concern expressed to me over the fact that liberal special interest groups were working with certain Senators - like Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton - to keep the Senate from even voting on many of President Bush's nominees.

In November, the people spoke, and spoke loudly about who should be picking judges. And the winner was not the ACLU, nor John Kerry, nor Ted Kennedy, nor Hillary Clinton.

But the liberal extremist groups - who cannot win at the ballot box, and whose agenda is repeatedly rejected by the voters and a majority of our elected officials - know that if they can keep good judges off the bench they still have a chance to win in court what they can't win through the democratic process. How many more times must we see the ACLU walk off with another kooky court victory on an issue that the voters would never deliver to them?

Whether it is their attempt to take the word "God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Ten Commandments out of the public square, protect the "rights" of child pornographers, or impose same sex marriage on the citizens of every state, the liberal extremists must count on their court allies.

You can help stop them.

If we are to protect the rights of all Americans, preserve the rule of law, and the right of the people to govern ourselves - we must continue to put good judges on the bench.

Right now, Senators who agree with the liberal extremist groups are a minority in the Senate. But they have been using an unprecedented procedural maneuver called the "filibuster" to prevent many of President Bush's nominees from even getting a vote by the full Senate. Using the filibuster, they only need 41 Senators to stop a nominee. They have turned the Constitution on its head - the minority rules - and you lose.

These Senators are failing to do the one thing that every one of their constituents expects them to do. Vote! They are refusing to do their constitutional duty in their "advise and consent" role in the appointment of judges.

The only thing that will get these Senators to do their duty is if they hear loud and strong from enough of us.

That is why I started the Judicial Confirmation Network. And that is why I am asking for your help today.

The JCN has started a petition drive to stop the obstruction and call on Senators to do their duty and vote on every nominee.

On our website we have a petition that I hope you will consider signing. We will do the work of collecting all the names and presenting the petition to the appropriate Senators. We just need you to put your name on the petition.

On our website you will also find other information about the issue and different ways you can help this effort. Please take a look at www.judicialnetwork.com.

The battle lines have already been drawn in the war over these nominees. But the biggest battle is yet to come. If we can win the fight over these filibustered nominees - then we will be that much stronger when the next Supreme Court opening occurs. That may be the biggest confirmation battle ever.

The Judicial Confirmation Network will be in that fight with every last resource we can muster. I hope you will be with us.

Thank you for considering joining the fight.

God bless America,

Gary

Phil Ochs Outside Of A Small Circle Of Friends

Look outside the window there's a woman being grabbed
They've dragged her to the bushes and now she's being stabbed
Maybe we should call the cops and try to stop the pain
But Monopoly is so much fun I'd hate to blow the game
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends

Riding down the highway yes my back is getting stiff
Thirteen cars are piled up they're hanging on a cliff
Maybe we should pull them back with our towing chain
But we gotta move and we might get sued and it looks like it's gonna
rain
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends

Sweating in the ghetto with the colored and the poor
The rats have joined the babies who are sleeping on the floor
Now wouldn't it be a riot if they really blew their tops
But they got too much already and besides we got the cops
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends

Oh there's a dirty paper using sex to make a sale
The Supreme Court was so upset they sent him off to jail
Maybe we should help the fiend and take away his fine
But we're busy reading Playboy and the Sunday New York Times
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends

Smoking marijuana is more fun than drinking beer
But a friend of ours was captured and they gave him thirty years
Maybe we should raise our voices ask somebody why
But demonstrations are a drag besides we're much too high
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends

Look outside the window there's a woman being grabbed
They've dragged her to the bushes and now she's being stabbed

Marvin Kalb was the first director of the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University. He is now a Senior Fellow in the Center's Washington office. He has appeared regularly on PBS's "NewsHour" and other television and radio programs.

Over a distinguished 30-year broadcast career Marvin Kalb served as chief diplomatic correspondent for CBS News and NBC News, and as moderator of "Meet the Press." Among his many honors are two Peabody Awards, the DuPont Prize from Columbia University, and more than a half-dozen Overseas Press Club awards. He has also served as a visiting professor and visiting scholar at GW.

A graduate of the City College of New York, he has an MA from Harvard and was zeroing in on his Ph.D. in Russian history when he left Cambridge in 1956 for a Moscow assignment with the State Department. From News Hounds - We watch FOX so you don't have too.

The Lies of Roger Ailes
As previously reported by Melanie, during his interview on C-Span last night, Roger Ailes, FOX News Chairman and CEO, presented a different version of FOX News than the one we know all too well.

According to Ailes, he requires his reporters to "present the news, if there is more than one side, make sure you have it. If you think there's something else you don't agree with make sure it's in the story."

Comment: If Ailes isn't lying, then he is unaware that his reporters are failing miserably at that assignment. See, for example, my posts Prison Abuse a la FOX: The Military Perspective Only, Major Garrett Promotes Bush's National Sales Tax, and FOX Acquits the US Marine in Fallujah Again.

"We haven't retracted a story in eight years." Comment: Off the top of my head, I can think of two: The Kerry is a Metrosexual "joke" played by reporter Carl Cameron and the phony Communists for Kerry story by Jane Roh.

The Most Biased Name in News
Fox News Channel's extraordinary right-wing tilt

Extra! July/August 2001

By Seth Ackerman

"I challenge anybody to show me an example of bias in Fox News Channel."--Rupert Murdoch (Salon, 3/1/01)

Years ago, Republican party chair Rich Bond explained that conservatives' frequent denunciations of "liberal bias" in the media were part of "a strategy" (Washington Post, 8/20/92). Comparing journalists to referees in a sports match, Bond explained: "If you watch any great coach, what they try to do is 'work the refs.' Maybe the ref will cut you a little slack next time." But when Fox News Channel, Rupert Murdoch's 24-hour cable network, debuted in 1996, a curious thing happened: Instead of denouncing it, conservative politicians and activists lavished praise on the network. "If it hadn't been for Fox, I don't know what I'd have done for the news," Trent Lott gushed after the Florida election recount (Washington Post, 2/5/01). George W. Bush extolled Fox News Channel anchor Tony Snow--a former speechwriter for Bush's father--and his "impressive transition to journalism" in a specially taped April 2001 tribute to Snow's Sunday-morning show on its five-year anniversary (Washington Post, 5/7/01). The right-wing Heritage Foundation had to warn its staffers not to watch so much Fox News on their computers, because it was causing the think tank's system to crash.

When it comes to Fox News Channel, conservatives don't feel the need to "work the ref." The ref is already on their side. Since its 1996 launch, Fox has become a central hub of the conservative movement's well-oiled media machine. Together with the GOP organization and its satellite think tanks and advocacy groups, this network of fiercely partisan outlets--such as the Washington Times, the Wall Street Journal editorial page and conservative talk-radio shows like Rush Limbaugh's--forms a highly effective right-wing echo chamber where GOP-friendly news stories can be promoted, repeated and amplified. Fox knows how to play this game better than anyone. Yet, at the same time, the network bristles at the slightest suggestion of a conservative tilt. In fact, wrapping itself in slogans like "Fair and balanced" and "We report, you decide," Fox argues precisely the opposite: Far from being a biased network, Fox argues, it is the only unbiased network. So far, Fox's strategy of aggressive denial has worked surprisingly well; faced with its unblinking refusal to admit any conservative tilt at all, some commentators have simply acquiesced to the network's own self-assessment. FAIR has decided to take a closer look.

<snip>

Fox's founder and president, Roger Ailes, was for decades one of the savviest and most pugnacious Republican political operatives in Washington, a veteran of the Nixon and Reagan campaigns. Ailes is most famous for his role in crafting the elder Bush's media strategy in the bruising 1988 presidential race. With Ailes' help, Bush turned a double-digit deficit in the polls into a resounding win by targeting the GOP's base of white male voters in the South and West, using red-meat themes like Michael Dukakis' "card-carrying" membership in the ACLU, his laissez-faire attitude toward flag-burning, his alleged indifference to the pledge of allegiance--and, of course, paroled felon Willie Horton.

Described by fellow Bush aide Lee Atwater as having "two speeds--attack and destroy," Ailes once jocularly told a Time reporter (8/22/88): "The only question is whether we depict Willie Horton with a knife in his hand or without it." Later, as a producer for Rush Limbaugh's short-lived TV show, he was fond of calling Bill Clinton the "hippie president" and lashing out at "liberal bigots" (Washington Times, 5/11/93). It is these two sensibilities above all--right-wing talk radio and below-the-belt political campaigning--that Ailes brought with him to Fox, and his stamp is evident in all aspects of the network's programming.

Your organization is partially devoted to promoting highly qualified individuals to the supreme court. Could you explain, using something resembling long established legal code, what highly qualified means?

Thank You

17. I wouldn't count on hearing my question but then again you never know.
I'd bet he's got a canned answer. Something like "Excellent question. I'm glad you asked that. We at the center for constitutional deconstruction are proud observers of the constitution and have a great appreciation for all that it has to offer. That being said, it has its limitations. It has become painfully obvious that runaway judges are accountable to no one. Not even God...and on and on until next question"

It wouldn't be complaining to c-span it would be an attempt to challenge to the anti-constitutional movement through legitimate channels with the widest audience. Faux news and CNN don't offer this kind of direct Q and A regardless of whose on the program.

18. C-Span is a total waste of time anymore.
It's no different than Fox,MSNBC and CNN. The last one to go completely rightwing, now they are all the same. We may as well accept the fact that WE HAVE NO VOICE. I've seen NOTHING about the Arnold fundraiser fiasco and 10,000 people coming out in protest and blocking him from going into his own fundraiser. It's all about the pope. What a phucked up country this is. Nothing is fair and balanced it's all one sided. You may as well forget about seeing anything positive happening for us,it will never be televised. Never. We can never make a difference or change things. Not enough people are being told the real truth about what is going on. :grr:

20. Today was a terrific day on C-Span for Dems
Opened with Harold Ford talking against Bush's Soc Sec plan, & explaining how the Bush road show is fixed, & nobody can ask questions.

Next: Russ Feingold doing a terrific job on explaing what's wrong with the Patriot Act & how it should be fixed.

Last but not least, Wes Clark talking about the screw ups in Iraq, & the harm it's doing to our military. Also discussing the hyped up pre-war intelligence, speaking out for dissenters to have a voice, like Michael Moore.

I thought it was a terrific Washington Journal, & C-Span is as fair as you will get.

22. Was any of this information useful to DU this morning?
I see the post had no replies since Apr-07-05 12:16 AM, so I'm not sure if any early morning members got to see it.

Too bad, we had an opportunity to express our views to some very interesting nutcases.

24. I watched as much as I could. My son was in need of a playmate at the time
There were some pretty decent callers and some predictable plants. One claimed to be a "liberal" and a "democrat" who could just not understand these activist judges legislating murder.

In all, it was good for a laugh. The real bread and butter was the "anti-constitutional Nutcase" forum later in the day.

Thanks for all that you do.
