Third World Pope

The possibility that the next pope could come from Latin America, Africa or Asia is creating a buzz from Mexico City to Manila, from Tegucigalpa to Kinshasa. Many Latin American Catholics said the only way to improve on a papacy they overwhelmingly supported would be to select someone from their own ranks.

I really think it would be good for the world to get a non-white Pope. No matter what you think of him or the tradition, the position of the Pope is one of the most powerful jobs in the world. Having a Latin American or African Pope could be really good for helping third-world countries. In Latin America, there are many cardinals and bishops that have championed helping the poor and the protection of human rights, so I think a good one might come out of there.

1. I couldn't agree more, but...
I am worried the Cardinals might choose to follow, what was a truly groundbreaking and boundary-breaking papacy, with someone more traditional and conventional as sort of a "place holder" pope.

I certainly hope that isn't the case. It would be the greatest tribute to Giovanni Paolo II to select another outsider, just like he was.

2. I'm not sure
In another thread I posted:

"In the Anglican Church, African bishops tend to be very conservative
in fact it was conservative African bishops who spearheaded the move to pressure the Anglican Church of Canada and the Episcopalian Church (US Anglicans) to leave the Anglican communion after over the isssue of homosexual clergy.

Are African Bishops in the Roman-Catholic Church known for being liberal or conservative?"

It would be a shame to see the Margaret Thatcher of Popes elected (i.e a milestone in that he's not Italian or European, but on the other hand a throwback to the bad old days in policy.)

Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodiguez Maradiaga of Honduras, the 62-year-old archbishop of Tegucigalpa, is also mentioned as a possible candidate. But he could be too much of a break for Vatican conservatives. He has studied clinical psychology and has a dynamic, outspoken style.

Probably won't happen, but there are good names being floated I think.

3. Greatest percentage of Catholics worldwide
in is Latin America.
Don't think it has anything to do with representation though.
