National Security vs. Personal Security

Now that we've all mellowed out a bit since 9/11 and anthrax isn't it time we address personal security. The lack of personal security is our nations greatest threat. How many millions are unemployed, underemployed, or one medical condition away from disaster? How many millions worry about the next 10 years, let alone retirement? What are the social ramifications of the financial and medical insecurity so many of us live with on a continual basis?

I think it's time Democrats and progressives add personal security to our list of talking points. What do you think?

1. Well, I did vote for that last time around in Wes Clark

It was his total package: Securing America's Future. Both national security and personal security.
Of course the nattering nabobs of the corporate media only featured him as a one-trick pony (war!) and never delved into his position papers on the domestic agenda, but I did.
And he was trying to look out for our personal security.

2. Statistics: Number of Deaths due to Terrorism vs. Lack of Medical Care or

...number of deaths due to terrorism vs. number of deaths cause by air pollution...

...terrorism deaths vs. auto accident deaths...

...terrorism deaths vs. deaths due to lack of medical care

THEN, IF YOU REALLY WANT TO RATTLE THEIR CAGES...

...tax dollars spent on the "War on Terror" vs. tax dollars spent on preventing air pollution...

...tax dollars spent on the "War on Terror" vs. tax dollars spent on auto safety...

& etc. & etc.

It is abundantly clear that if we want to prevent the most American deaths per tax dollar spent, the "War on Terror" is a hugely inefficient way to spend our money.

3. Yes.

Maybe now that we don't see the "terror color codes" fluctuating everyday, these social issues will creep into the dialogue. When you look at it, Bush isn't having such a good start to his 2nd term.
Also as more of our new vets return, we should highlight the issues that they will be facing.
