I'm answering a Zogby survey. Which state best represents the
American Ideal?

I don't know! I want to choose one that is as equally split between Dem & Pub, because I really do think one keeps the other honest.

Which State would you choose?

8. Hey...Me Too!
Brilliant minds....thinking alike....
It was a tough call about voting off though. I've long wanted to get rid of South Carolina. Ever driven there? If not, don't. They've got the most jacked up road system I've ever seen. Never been so happy to see that ridiculous "The Peach State Welcomes You" sign in all my life.

iniatives, and the move to leave the union. Isn't it a bunch of Vermonters who want to secede??

I think I checked the "don't know" or "don't care" option. Whichever one they gave for the intellectually lazy.

For one thing I think the term "American ideal" is bogus. I have no idea if I define it the same way as the people who created the survey or are interpreting the survey. I try to avoid questions that require mind reading.

As for voting a state off the island, I was disappointed there was a "Whichever one Bush is in today, so do it fast" option.

Big, diverse, prosperous.
Enormous city, rural upstate, suburbia as well.
Left-of-center.

9. Vermont is the ideal
rated the 2nd best place to live, we do have a good mix of R & D, its just the (R's) here understand and have a clue on how to live and govern with social programs while being business friendly and protecting the environment. Our state government REALLY listens to their constituants OVER that of special interests. We do not like anything close to a monopoly (3 McD's and 4 Wallyworlds in the state). We are small but our voice is heard.

11. Wisconsin?
Generally they a hard working bunch with a bit of Midwest farm work ethic. It might not be as progressive in politics as some other states but it is still pretty blue especially in southern Wisconsin. The people are generally friendly (not southern hospitality but still). The education system seems fairly good for US standards.

The environment is pretty good and there are a lot nice wooded areas. Outside of Milwaukee, Green Bay, and the occasional stinky farm the state is pretty and has a nice environment.

Born in rural Florida and I live in Madison Wisconsin now.

15. I would watch out for States that are split.
We almost have that in Missouri who are probably now leaning toward being a red state. In some ways the split here represents the worst in both parties. Honesty has never been a Missouri virtue and this appraisal is from a life long resident. We did have two outstanding exceptions to that Mark Twain and Harry Truman.

16. I live in NYC, but I do think in total its too urban
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 02:40 PM by Fabio
My top three would be:

Illinois:
Chicago area - urban and blue
Downstate - otherwise, very red
Rich Political History

Pennsylvania:
Very balances, red v blue (see 2004 results)
Philadelphia represents NE Corridor politics well (mix of blue blood GOP, NE liberals)
Pittsburgh - Old school, union dems, mid west ethic
In between - Red, as in Alabama

Colorado
Obviously very tight red v blue
only one that represents urban ethic, midwest (ie eastern part of the state is like kansas) and the intermountain west (which in itself is largely divided by more convserative land users like ranchers and farmers, and the more crunchy ski mountaineers that are there...and prevelant in many parts of this country actually (vermont for sure)

thoughts?

I love my state. Though I'm kinda liking Minnesota lately as well....Vermont I have yet to visit but it seems like it's produced some good independent minds as well.

24. i picked Oregon.
i live in Seattle, but i find the tax structure regressive.

Oregon, Portland specifically, is addressing long-term transportation infrastructure more than any other city in America.

27. I have the one they sent me, but I think you have to get your own
from Zogby.

http://interactive.zogby.com/s/inew.cfm?

I removed my ID, but the rest of the link is the one I received. Maybe you can register there and get an email from them for this poll.

26. California, no doubt
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 03:04 PM by demwing
There is freedom and opportunity in Califoria with diverse cultures, socially, politically, and spiritually.

CA is a coastal state and a border state. There are rural areas, big cities, mountains, beaches, deserts, forests. Economically, there are areas of energy exploration, agriculture, and high tecnology that sit side by side. You'll find huge corporations and street corner merchants.

It is a state with a rich history, and one that sits on the edge of tomorrow.

If California were a to select a new motto, I would advise: "Harmony in Diversity." That's as close to "E Pluribus Unum" as I can get.

To me, that's the American ideal.
