Look at them now – just look at them. Running around like inverse grim reapers, talking points at the ready. “Almost dead woman on Aisle 5”, they say, “so let’s get ready. Here’s the checklist – is up down? Is black white? Is Falwell finished meeting with God yet, and does he have the fax? How will it play in Peoria? Should we fake compassion, anger, and/or moral outrage - just give us the word. Hey, Rove, where are the poll results –that goddamned focus group costs a few bucks, you know. How’s this for a motto – ‘If she’s dead, then Florida’s red’. I like it – tell Hannity to stay another day at the hospice – and find that nutty nurse, will ya? She’s an effin' goldmine.”
Welcome to the Republican nightmare, 2005 Edition. These are the people who some in party vote with, who some in our party agree with, and who some in our party want to “work” with. Many of us here have argued long and hard about the folly that is bi-partisanship, and many have made the point that there is nothing to gain and everything to lose by embracing even the smallest tenet of what these bastards stand for. I ask those folks now to stand back and look what these people are doing.
It is a certifiable insane asylum now; Christianity gone berserk in a world where what one believed yesterday has no bearing on what one believes today. Tom DeLay, a stain on the human condition if there ever was one, wraps himself up in a perverse God that only he can see and proclaims himself the new Messiah in a Cliffs Notes version of the Bible that he calls “Increasing Thy Majority In Congress.” Bill Frist, a man whose own hand has ended the life of countless others, now finds himself hosting the new Republican TV hit “You Too Can Diagnose From Television”, while Georgie is busy disavowing anything he signed while Governor of Texas, because after all that was so long ago. Rumor has it he still watches the Carla Faye Tucker episode over and over, and still gets a chuckle out of the whole “conversion” thing. The rest of the Creationist Congress is doing The Resurrection Shuffle on Fox News, but when someone asks them how they’re going to pay for it all they all magically need to be somewhere else. Oh, and that sanctity of marriage crap was SO last year, don’t ya think?
This is the face of the Republican Party today, and THESE are the people who can and will continue to cut our throats if we get in their way. Look at them molding their stupid minions in any way they choose and tell me fascism is not this close to picking out window treatments for the new home. Watch them take the deep grief of a man and twist it solely for their own political gain and tell me why we shouldn’t get upset when somebody we trust trades favors with them. Watch The President Of The United States interrupt yet another vacation to engage in an act of contemptible pure political hypocrisy and tell me why we should not hold EVERY Democrat in Congress to this simple code of decency: when you see evil, speak out. If you don’t, we will try our best to find somebody who will.
The line has been crossed now - we all see that. It’s talking-in-tongues time now in our nation’s Capital, and the revival tent is standing room only. Caught up in the chase for The Rapture, the lunatics will say and do anything. In order to stop them, we need people on our sides with conviction and with conscience. We have some, but we need more. We need them deep in the South, and in patrician New England, different accents reading the same speech. We need people, paraphrasing the good doctor, who believe that values transcend geography, and who will not trade my life for yours if you happen to live in the proper zip code at the time of the legislation.
I don’t think that’s asking too much, nor do I think it smacks of ideological purity. If you do, just sit back and watch what is happening right now, and ask yourselves if those on the other side are the people who represent ANY part of your vision of America. As they continue to destroy our foundation and bring back The Crusades, ask yourselves this question: If my party were in the majority, would the other side be willing to work with me, to ensure that my vision of America comes to fruition?
When you stop laughing, come on over. We can use the help.
