Over two years ago -- I could "feel" the change at the Oak Harbor Naval Air Base -- and started predicting that bushie was getting ready to invade. (on edit -- many people were telling me that bushie was merely putting on a show in order to get Saddam to give up his WMD. "No", said I, bushie has every intention of invading -- he isn't merely bluffing -- he will invade.)
The gates to the base were on heightened alert status -- you can tell by the way the Marines responded to each vehicle stopping at the gate.
Also the number of take offs and landings increased by a huge number -- and the night time practice runs were really "intense."
The Marines attached to Naval Air Bases will drill more intensely -- and this intensity and anxiety can be felt or almost smelled in the air.
Oak Harbor is barometer for war -- what I noticed as soon as bushie got into office -- suddenly there was money for NEW housing. And this air base that was winding down after the cold war -- was now dressing up for a new war. The feeling was reminiscent of the Vietnam era.
I have since asked others who were visiting a nearby Marina at the same time if they noticed the changes -- no one did.
But then I grew up on Naval Air Bases -- and I was living on-base during the Cuban Missile crisis and during the Vietnam War.
It is almost as if the military bases are living creatures -- and you can pick up the emotions of the collective anxiety, anticipation of the people who live and breath the military way of life.
But thankfully I am not anywhere near a US military base at the moment -- and it is a relief not to feel the growing tension from the low level military personnel who must know by know that they are getting screwed by the bushie war machine.
The following is a rather crude saying written on the bathroom stall of a large military base. "Working hard to give birth to another bush."
