The Real Story - From the Dean Blog

The Real Story

Here’s the real story on Monday night – the one the press still hasn’t told.

I’ve been around campaigns for a long time. On most campaigns, if you come in third in Iowa with 18% and you go to the after party, you’re lucky to find 4 people there. Most every one by the time it’s over has left to find another party and another campaign.

But on Monday night Howard Dean walked in to the ballroom in Des Moines and there were 3500 people there. And the energy was higher than most victory parties I’ve been to.

The Governor looked out at the room and saw 3500 people who had come from all across the country because they believed in changing their country and he wanted them to know how proud he was of them and their efforts. And he wanted them to know that we’re going on no matter what.

He wasn’t thinking about the cameras. It was the people right in front of him who had done so much because they believe in a better America that he was speaking to.

That the press would report on his speech for one day is understandable. But what’s remarkable is that they could run it over and over for 48 hours and still call it journalism. The State of the union took place. The next day we find out that Bush plans to ask for $40 billion more for his war in Iraq. But what do they run over and over again?

We’re going to fight back in New Hampshire. We’re getting our message out. I’ve been reading your comments on the blog and the forum and your emails and the dedication you’re showing now is what is going to win this.

Howard Dean has the courage, integrity and record of leadership to win the nomination and defeat George W. Bush in November. Contribute what you can to help us win New Hampshire. Come here to volunteer. Together we are going to take our country back.

Joe Trippi
campaign manager
Dean for America

1. Still Inappropriate
There is no way in my mind that the *Real Story* can be justified.

"...he wanted them to know how proud he was of them and their efforts." If that was Dean's goal he could have accomplished it in a much more appropriate manner. No matter how they spin it, there's no way to explain (or justify) such bizarre behavior.

2. There is not a prayer in hell that the dems will win with any other...
candidate but Dean. Even then, if he gets the nomination, he might be able to barely squeek by.

Everybody forgets the raw, unprincipled pubs. That is why they want anybody but Dean. He might really win!

3. You just won't let this story die eh?
That speech was horrible and no amount of spin will change that so please give it a rest.

4. Hey Joe, the real story is at the polls
Check the entrance and exit polls bro. This howling speech is actually a distraction in disguise. The 3500 people from across the country did not vote in the polls

6. The real story is that resisting Dean is NOT futile
no matter what Al Gore and Tom Harkin and whoever that other guy was might say. The voters did not totally reject Howard, they just liked the other guys better.

Poor Dick Gephardt is the guy who should be complaining. Whatever it was he did, his campaign clearly imploded and nobody has yet to come up with a reasonable explanation why.

What happened to the Dean campaign is it got offered a lesson in humility. If they listen they'll do well. If they try to "tough it out" Iowa will only be the first in a string of rejections.

7. Casting your pearls
before swine - don't bother with this crowd.

DemocraticUnderground is not the nation. A primary is not a caucus, and we have every reason to keep fighting.

8. Whats really incredible is that that speech was nothing new
Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 08:31 AM by NewHampster
I just saw a replay of one of the early fall speeches that I attended and Dean screamed just as loud. You have the power in New Hampshire, You have the power in South Carolina and on and on. It was that passion that brought many on board the train and its that passion that will keep us there.

When I first heard the Dr. scream, all I could think was maybe, just maybe we have to scream that loud to be heard.
