True Wal-Mart story
A few years back a friend and former Wally World slave told me an interesting tid bit, that is not surprising, about Wal Mart.

Remember that 60 Minutes piece (when 60minutes was still somewhat journalistic) regarding where, exactly, the Wal Mart goods were made? You know they uncovered Bangladesh, China, India, etc...

Well the thrust of the show was to find out why then WalFart advertises so heavily as "Made in America". It was a show that embarrassed them.

So the next morning, following the show, she gets to work and guess what they have her do all morning, in a panic pace?
Yep...they had the employees removing the big red/white/blue "Made in USA" poster signs above the foreign plastic crap products.

It's all about imagery folks.

3. Not to be picky, but given the set of circumstances,
I think they were doing the right thing THAT morning. At least, they finally decided to be "honest"...of course, it made someone putting a gun to their head to be that way.

5. it's certainly better than being dishonest, but I think Shred was
implying (and s/he'll correct me if wrong) that the best thing to do, if the "Made in the USA" values are good, would be to make the actions consistent with the values, not to change the values to match the actions.

4. LOL! Reminds me of a story I heard during the "Made In Japan"
days when I was a child.

Apparently the American buying public (that's all we are--a "buying public") was hyper-aware of "Made In Japan" goods. This caused PR people to hype that "Made In Japan" was synonymous with "cheap".

Supposedly a place in Japan re-named itself "USA". They then started putting "Made In USA" on the goods they produced.

The story is almost surely just a rehash of a parlor joke, but I find it particularly fitting in these times.
