Marriage Statistics from a Red State
Down in sweet home Alabama, residents are huffing and puffing for a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. 54% said in a poll that they strongly supported such an amendment. Poll Director Jim Seroka said the issue "has captured people's attention because your dealing with the family." In 2003 there were 7.5 marriages per 1,000 people and 5.2 divorces per 1,000 people according to the Alabama Center for Health Statistics. Dare I suggest to the holier than thou lunatics in Bama, if you want to "focus on the family" get your own house in order. Nah, that would be too hard. Hating homos is so much easier.

1. Maybe a ban on Homosapian Marriage would address the problem
more efficiently?

3. Hating IS easier. And much more popular than criticizing divorce
I think the progression of public piety has gone from being against divorce to being against abortion to being against gays. Why? Because preachers and politicians look out over their congregations/audiences and see lots of divorced people; they know lots have had abortions; but they think they know who is or is not gay. Even the preacher and politician understands he might get divorced, but they pretty much know if they are going to go gay.

That's why just seeing gays act like just plain folks--and realizing that gays have relatives, friends and coworkers that just don't appreciate badmouthing--is going to win the day. Sooner or later, it isn't going to be any more popular to demonize gays than demonizing divorcees.
