(Un)repentant Nader voters
photo of bumbersticker not in online edition

NewsweekJan. 26 issue - That bumper sticker above used to have an UN before the REPENTANT, but Jason Salzman took a razor to it during last year's bombing of Baghdad. His vote for Ralph Nader, he believed, gave us President George W. Bush, which gave us this foreign-policy disaster. Later, over beers one night, he and Aaron Toso thought up another "liberating act of self-correction": RepentantNaderVoter.com. (They run a politically progressive PR firm in Denver where, obviously, business isn't brisk.) Traffic on the site has risen sharply since last month's launch of the Nader 2004 presidential exploratory committee. Visitors "solemnly pledge to vote for the presidential candidate most likely to defeat George W. Bush in 2004." There's an FAQ that explains why you should feel guilty.

1. To be honest (and a little cynical)....
I'm sure the amount of repentant Nader voters is not so large that it would offset the number of Gore Voters or non-voters from 2000 who may now have fallen for Bush's lines and tactics.

Nader got what? 2 Million votes? Let's say half of those now think it was a bad idea (I would guess not even that many). You don't think there are at least a million people who didn't vote for bush but fell under his spell post 9/11?

5. Could go back and forth all day
What about the manufacturing labor force that has lost their jobs...and they ain't coming back. Those will swing the other way (especially the steel workers who feel betrayed by Bush after lifting the steel tariffs).

2. Love to hear from the repentant Democrats
in Florida who ACTUALLY brought us this travesty. Scapegoating morons.
Liars. Enablers. Traitors. Assholes.

3. Lockstep politics is for politicians in Congress
...if it is to be expected at all.

It is NOT to be expected of the voting public.

This is where Democrats are glaringly backwards.

6. Yeah, it never ceases to amaze me...
that people can defend congressional Democrats for flocking into Bush's arms and supporting him, but anyone who voted Nader is considered to have betrayed Democracy on a fundamental level.
