10. Part of the system
Google uses to determine a site's rankings is the number of links into the site - especially from other popular sites.

Really helps a lot if they get clicked on as well, so take the time to click on a few friends links - right click to open in a new window or tab so you don't loose your place.

Off to bed - please help keep this kicked....

29. How Google sets page rankings
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 05:45 AM by Jim Lane
Google has not disclosed the exact algorithm that determines page rank. I'm not sure on the point about visits, but I think that most visits to a site are of little or no importance; visits to the site through a particular link are much more important. If that's correct, then people who get to the "There Is No Crisis" site by clicking a link like <http://www.thereisnocrisis.com> don't affect the search results for "Social Security", but people who get there by clicking a link like Social Security or Social Security Reform do affect the search results.

Here's some information about Googlebombing in general.

Incidentally, some old Googlebombs are still working fine. I just Googled the phrase "miserable failure" and found Bush's bio as the top hit. A Google search for Santorum does not take you to the Senator's bio.

I suspect that multiple links on the same page (like this one, with all these posts) don't add much. It's more likely that Google looks at the number of pages with the link, not the number of links. Somebody should have edited the Demopedia article to add these links before now (I've done it). I kvetch about this just to call people's attention to Demopedia. The vast majority of DUers seem to be ignoring it, which is a shame. If you find good information about Social Security, edit the article to include the information. That way your work won't get lost when the thread with your post dies out. (My attempt at a catchy slogan: "Demopedia -- the kick that keeps on kicking!")

30. Thank you.
Very informative.

Since many of us have put the link/s in our signature, these links will be on many different pages. The thing to do now is convince our fellow posters to click the signature links from time to time. Correct?

63. Googlebombing tactics
I think you're right that it does some good if people click links from DU pages, but probably not much.

I'm no expert on Google's algorithm, but I susect that it gives more weight when people do a Google search and click a particular link on the list of results. "There Is No Crisis" doesn't show up in the first ten pages of hits, though, so it would take some effort to do that.

Are the people at "There Is No Crisis" on board with this campaign? More important than a few people clicking through to their site now and then would be for the website owners to tailor their site to improve their Google ranking. For example, Google gives more weight when a term occurs in the title of a page. At the Social Security Reform site we want to pump, there are pages titled "Daily Briefing", "Wall of Shame", "Useful Research", etc., but none titled "Social Security Reform". A page with that title would be more likely to score high in the Google ranking. For example, when I just Googled for "Social Security reform", all that fine material at "There Is No Crisis" was invisible in the top 100 hits, but coming in at #61 was a "guest blog" by Matt Stoller at MyDD.com. It may be that MyDD is widely linked to, but it's also a factor that his article there is titled "Social Security Reform: The Hidden Way to Pay for Iraq and Tax Cuts". (By the way, note that that particular article is based in part on the Washington Post article that the Post later retracted, so some of Matt's comments may not be accurate.)

The whole business of tailoring a site to get a high ranking can be overdone, and is grossly abused by some sites (especially commercial sites), but "virtually no one would question the ethics of choosing the vocabulary of your site (and especially of your page titles) to emphasize words that you know are often searched for by people in your market." (from an article on search engine optimization).

55. How I did it.
I didn't actually make 2 lines. After the first line, pressing "enter" just recorded that line.

So, what I did was "center" each link I made. Using square brackets, I did this:

{center}{link:www.thereisnocrisis.com|Social Security}{/center}{center}{link:www.thereisnocrisis.com|Social Security Reform}{/center}

That was all one single line of type. Because I centered each link, it came out on two lines.

40. Maybe there is no crisis after all
The White House seems to be changing rationales:

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-na-speech3feb03,1,466993,print.story?coll=la-headlines-business

In a significant shift in his rationale for the accounts, Bush dropped his claim that they would help solve Social Security's fiscal problems -- a link he sometimes made during last year's presidential campaign. Instead, he said the individual accounts were desirable because they would be "a better deal," providing workers what he said would be a higher rate of return and "greater security in retirement."

A Bush aide, briefing reporters on the condition of anonymity, was more explicit, saying that the individual accounts would do nothing to solve the system's long-term financial problems.

That candid analysis, although widely shared by economists, distressed some Republicans.

"Oh, my God," one GOP political strategist said when he learned of the shift in rhetoric. "The White House has made a lot of Republicans walk the plank on this. Now it sounds as if they are sawing off the board."
