many rights. When, in fact, the Iraqi women were among the most educated and politically involved women in the entire ME. Some of Saddam's top officials were women. Now it is true that the religious women did not appear in many secular positions dressed up in religious garb, but most of that was because of the restrictions withing their own religious sects. But my sister was in school with an Iraqi woman who has discussed the role of women in Iraqi government and society for years. Had anyone of us visited Iraq during the 80's and early 90's you would have seen women walking freely, working, driving, dressed in jeans, and western garb, even drinking and smoking in private.
