| Focus On The Family's tax-exempt status needs to be revoked. |
|
A massive campaign to do just that needed to be started yesterday.
Who's with me?

| 3. MoveOn is a 527, the rules are different |
|
And unlike PUSH and the NAACP, Dobson proudly and publicly stated recently that they intend to use their influence in a much more political way.
Religious tax-exemption, gone.

| 9. Several rules -- why I am with you |
|
Focus on Family has its tax status on its web site and is a 501(c)(3), which means that it cannot engage in any political activity. That would include using or allowing another to use its assets in political activity and their mailing list is an asset of the 501(c)(3). From MoveOn's web site: The MoveOn family of organizations consists of three entities. MoveOn.org, a 501(c)(4) organization, primarily focuses on education and advocacy on important national issues. MoveOn PAC, a federal PAC, primarily helps members elect candidates who reflect our values. And MoveOn.org Voter Fund, a 527 organization, primarily educates voters on the positions, records, views, and qualifications of candidates for public office.
The rules for a 501(c)(4) (MoveOn) allow advocacy while the rules for a 501(c)(3) (Focus on Family) do not. Certainly neither the 501(c)(3) nor its assets can be used by it or Dobson to unseat or threaten candidates for office.
So I am with you.

We need more of this action. If Dr. Jay Dob-bob and his minions on Mt. Doom, Colorado want to play in the political sandbox (i.e. meddling in civic law) they should ante up to the IRS.

Thats a BIG No-No for these kind of groups. You can say to vote against someone but not for.

As a previous resident of Colorado I have to say that he should have lost his tax exempt status over 4 years ago with openly pushing for a specific candidate. (guess who)
He's put his hands into the political ring in many ways by choosing to distort the issues multiple times.
Then again, he should have his animals taken from him for beating his dog and admitting to it in his book.
Nobody should take this cult leader seriously anyway.
This is a man who lauded the taking of a sword to a child's toy.
This is a man who has told us to fear Sponge Bob because he.. gasp, holds hands with his friend. (Like kids don't do that without knowing it's not socially acceptable to adults until they hit... gasp.. the first age of reason (Typically 7-8 years old)
This is a man who spoke publicly against Women's Right's...
Focus on the Family has tried to take over Colorado Springs near the Air Force Academy. Many of the military members there have one of two opinions on this nutjob... they either foolishly love him or wisely fear and loath him.

People like dobson should not be allowed tax exempt status. And actually only a church, place of worship should be exempt from taxes. All other property owned by religious groups should be taxed.

|
I posted this last night... http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph... I sent out emails using their action alerts last night that were contrary to what they were asking their members to do. I got a nice email back from Olbermann today regarding the email I sent him telling him I supported him speaking out against them.

Let's get rid of his tax revoked status. In fact, let's get his lying organization shut down.

Focus on the FAmily have their own voicebox on local News outlets such as this one---> www.14wfie.com Scroll down, its in the middle somewhere. I wonder what the content of the programming is. Try this one: It's down and on the right hand column http://www.14wfie.com/Global/category.asp?C=38579

Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 08:25 PM by izzybeans
http://www.family.org/welcome/financials/2003_990.pdf I don't know much so perhaps someone could pick through this. I do notice they are in fact a 501(c)3 with gross receipts totaling over $130 mil. nearly all of it is public funding. $45 mil paid to "officers" with $95 mil in net assets. Edit: updated link
