Considering becoming a political candidate...
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 03:20 PM by olafvikingr
I have never run for any office before, and not sure how "electable" I may or may not be, but can't be worse than alot of the folks currently in public office. Any DU'ers, particularly those already involved as elected officials have any helpful advice for someone considering this?

Specifically I am looking into what would be feasible for County or State Legislature.

1. Be prepared to do alot of fundraising
It takes quite a bit of cash to buy campaign materials.

Start networking and organizing now. Let people know you are thinking of running. Get involved in your local party meetings, etc. Get the word out and perhaps some energetic volunteers will offer to help you get moving.

Good luck!

2. I don't know where you are on the polical spectrum
But you might consider joining DFA and going to a Wellstone action or 21st century Democrats training weekend.
You will learn all you need to know about running. Then you need to check out your time line. When do you need to file? What is the paperwork involved etc...?
Another thing to consider is joining your local party organization and go to the meetings. People new to running for office, who are socially liberal and fiscally moderate are exactly the kinds of people DFA is interested in supporting. By joining DFA you might find a group of people in your area who would be your first support and help.

GOOD LUCK
