Poll question: Poll: Dean, Nontraditional Media and Iowa
Posting this poll for Melodybe:

If Dean had spent the time to go on Letterman, the Daily Show, and Conan O'Brien would it have helped him in Iowa?

1. At one caucus site 50 age 18-25 promised to show for Dean -only 1 did
Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 02:37 PM by papau
Folks over-estimated the number of young adults that would show up.

It is the old folks - over 35's - that vote - and there Dean lost the "looks presidential/most likely to win in Nov" vote.

I disagree and think Dean would win in November - unless shut out by the media (a real possibility).

3. Personal feelings aside, I don't care if you rabidly detest Dean
the purpose of my poll is that while Dean was high profile he completely ignored the late night talk show circuit and it is killing him. Yeah, a few months ago he went on Leno and he a a small bit for Letterman at the end of Nov, but he spent the entire last month whoreing the network news channels. This is when he was at his highest profile he ignored the 35 million average tv watchers. The only thing that the network news did was gather ammunition and splash it across the papers and the blurbs, it is rediculous.

Dean's handlers, I'm trying get get Mr. Trippi on the phone as we speek, are doing a piss poor job and have been for the last month. If Dean had not walked right past Stephen Colbert at the Harkin/Sheen/Riener rally in Iowa things would not be as bad as they are now. Dean should have been explaining the confederate Flag comment to David Letterman not freaking Bill O'Rielly!

Whilst talking to my friends and family that do not pay attention to pollitics, they only heard the nightly news blurbs and the Late Night jokes. Dean's people are out of touch and if they don't shape up by the end of this week Dean is dead man walking.

4. If Dean doesn't take massive steps to win NH he will get a media shut out
The media is already twisting his loss and it looks real bad. If he can't win NH they are going to completely ignore him and then villify all of the truely important things that he said. This is going to hurt ALL of us, because they will say Dean lost b/c he was angry, which does have some truth too it, but it was more because he did not explain and personify it for the average American. Y'all will see ALL of our other candidates playing nice from here until November and that will make it real easy for them to steal another election.

5. To think that the reason Dean had such a poor showing...
was because he didn't spend enough time on Letterman and Leno is naive. You can't talk policy in depth on those shows. He's not Hugh Grant. Jay Leno is not going to want him to come on and explain peripheral comment about the Confederate flag. If he was the nominee then maybe, but not as an 8th of the democratic primary equation. Stop bothering Trippi.

10. You can't talk policy in depth on those shows, but ...
Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 05:31 PM by damnraddem
the people one will reach via those shows aren't going to listen to policy in depth, anyway. The issue is still to reach them. The question is whether those shows wanted, asked for, or would accept appearances by Dean.

But an appearance on the Daily Show would help -- and Dean could probably talk policy in greater depth, highlighted by more intelligent jokes from Stewart, than he could on those other shows.

6. Kerry's lame motorcycle appearance was not why he did well
Late night TV is not the answer. It's getting your message out w/o letting the other guy get their message out.

7. When statistics show more people are getting their news from Late Night TV
Yes, Dean was wrong to avoid these shows. I still remember how The Daily Show helped boost McCain just because McCain let The Daily Show open access - letting the 'correspondents' ride the campaign bus and to do 'bits' with McCain and his wife.

8. I'm trying to get through to the Dean folks but it is like beating concret
with a rubber mallet. I will not leave Trippi alone, then man is not doing a good job! Whoever let Dean go talk to that rally looking like a raving luney needs to be fired this instant. This is the MAIN problem with this campaign we are treating Dean like he is a freaking god and not like he is an aging moviestar that needs a block buster. The average voter knows squat about Dean. They don't know that he was Gov. They don't know about the healthcare he got for 97% of Vermonts children. They don't know about his balanced budgets! That is most definitely Mr. Trippi's fault. The average american knows that Dean is angry and thanks to CNN they are going to play it like the man is like fucking Hitler. This is completely unacceptable! My fellow Dean people we are damaged goods and if we don't fix it now we are DEAD! The average TV watcher needs to sit down with Mr. Dean and actually hear what he has to say, otherwise they will only fade into a footnote.

9. Letterman and Leno...
isn't the way to go. If you really want that kind of sit down intimacy you need a show like 60 minutes. You're not going to get (and have the average American interested in listening to) a policy speech at 1130 at night on what is basically a comedy variety show.

12. You might suggest
that Governor Dean purchase a 15-30 minute block of air time on a local NH TV station. He has the money. Now is the time to spend it. It might give him a chance to define his campaign on his own terms.

11. Only for those who view politics and war as entertainment.
Such as Kerry and Edwards.
