Why can I believe this? "Saddam disputes US version of his capture"
Look at the Bush version of the Jessica Lynch story and then her own version ....

CAIRO (dpa)december 27, 2004 - A lawyer for Saddam Hussein has disputed the US version of how the former Iraqi dictator was captured a year ago, reports said Sunday.

In an interview with the weekly al-Osbou magazine to appear Monday, Saddam's lawyer Khalil al-Duleimi said that the toppled dictator had described the US account of his capture as "a silly fabricated cowboy movie."

Saddam was captured on December 13, 2003. US forces said the deposed leader was found hiding in a hole in the ground near a farmhouse in al-Dour, south of his hometown Tikrit.

Al-Duleimi, who had a four-and-a-half hour meeting with Saddam last week in an unidentified location, quoted the former president as saying he was at a friend's house praying just before sunset when US soldiers surrounded him.

1. They're both liars...
The true story is probably somewhere in the middle of these 2 accounts.

4. But
The videos were taken after he was captured, not during the operation to capture him.

8. I hadn't thought of that!
But you're right! Even if the capture paralleled what Saddam says, the soldiers could have taken him out to the hole, threw him in, then told him, "Hey, F*ckface, get out of there or we'll throw in a grenade," then video taping him climbing out and claiming this was his "capture."

Who knows what the true story is...I'd have to doubt BOTH Saddam and the Bush-fellating US corporate media...

5. is there an actual video of him emerging?
or just of the hole in the ground where he was said to have been. And wasn't/isn't it standard operating procedures of the army to throw a grenade in these holes first?

7. whether it's true or not
The use of the word "cowboy" shows that Saddam knows how to get in a dig.

11. He looked too disheveled to have been just praying at a friend's house
so I agree the truth is somewhere in between. He was hiding somewhere he wasn't able to keep himself from looking like a homeless guy.

13. Yeah, but
they said he had been captured a few days earlier.

Frankly, I'm hard pressed not to look like a homeless person on a day-to-day basis, and I have a home. After 2 or 3 days in the same clothes sleeping in the woods, I look (and smell) like I've been living in a cave for five years, give or take a month.

22. My thought exactly
its not like he doesn't have a vested interest in saving face or anything.

He did look very disoriented and dishevled.

Not that I don't buy that we do the "Staging" and storyline pr thing... wouldn't be suprised for example, if we knew where he was and staked it out for a few days in such an obvious way that those who might be providing supplies simply didn't provide them - in order to make sure that he was even more desperate/gross/etc. state when he was "captured". While I made this example up, it is not beyond belief that we could have manipulated the storyline.

But to glomb on to Saddam's word (oh honest and integrity driven man that he is...) as "truth"? Silly.

12. I thought the Kurds captured him, and collected reward?
No kidding. I can't remember where I heard it - floating around on the internets, I guess. But the story was that Saddam was hiding in the north, and was captured by Kurds who didn't treat him too well. (Understandably.) They turned him over to US military for a huge reward. Military faked his capture for the media, a la Jessica Lynch, etc.

staged the toppling of the statute over there ...we know they lied about uh ....WMD!!!! So why believe anything they really say about what happened here? Or anything else for that matter ...like conducting honest elections ....

16. I agree. The Emperor's government has absolutely no
credibility what-so-ever. Believe nothing that comes from Caligula or his minions without external corroboration (and not from his "latifundia" media either). A plague on both houses. We have to know that when the Emperor speaks, he lies, period.

17. That's what I heard..
And what I tend to believe.

I'm not going to buy Saddam's version of the story, he's just saving face. That whole capture was pretty humiliating for Mr. Big Shit.

And by the way, there is no way in hell he choose to be that disheveled. He is well known for his hygiene fetish.

15. Most DUers disputed US version of his capture
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 11:16 PM by Tinoire
at the time of his caption.

No one fell for that crap they staged. A few trolls came and went that night as I recall.

DU thread from the time of the capture.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

See if you can spot the trolls,

I have about 6 more of those threads. All the same. DUers did not believe that crap and a lot of the people giving us our hard time were tombstoned for whatever offenses sometime between then and now.

It's strange to re-read those now.

As i recall, for a long time there were many DU threads discussing the many peculiarities and anomolies that accompanying the big, splashy news of Saddam's capture. oodles of Doublespeak.

18. Remember the rescue of Jessica Lynch
The Pentagons version of her capture(she fired her weapon until she was out of ammo) and her rescue from the Iraqi hospital was total bullshit. I find it extremely difficult to believe SH was pulled out of his hidey- hole like they contend. There is a helluva lot more to the story about how they found him. They made sure everyone was aware he was eating canned ham or pork in violation of Islamic law. This admin is not above any lie to further this war.

24. Liar. He's trying to save face among the zealots who follow(ed) him.
Edited on Thu Dec-30-04 09:40 AM by w4rma
That "praying" crap is just for consumption of the gullible fundamentalist zealots who followed him. He's still playing the role of a politician who lies to the gullible. The likelyhood that he was praying is about the same likelyhood that the plutocrats who are pulling the GOP's strings really believe in Jesus's gospel rather than power.
