In your opinion, what is the most important issue right now?
If you could only work on one issue what would it be? Abortion? Election fraud? Global warming? Civil rights? I know it's hard to pick since we're facing attack on all fronts, but what do you think the single most important issue facing us is right now?

5. Preserving reproductive rights.
2. human rights (domestic partnership benefits),
3. peace vigils (end the Iraq war),
4. election reform.

Oh, this is not working. They are all important.

Maybe getting progressives to join and stick with their groups, such as Democracy for America, Progressive Democrats of America, and democraticunderground.com, so that we can work together on all of them.

12. I think you may be right
Without free elections, all other bets are off. The only reason this one isn't automatically my top issue is because of the uncertainty that surrounds it. It's frustrating. If there was rock hard proof of fraud it'd be a rallying cry and I think real change would happen. Instead, it's iffy, and 'not enough to change the outcome of the election,' and 'alleged,' etc.

And I shouldn't even begin to bring up the whole BH thing.

Good one LeftCoast!

Without fair elections, all bets are off.

This is part of the framing of the issue. This affects everyone. It is totally nonpartisan.

WRITE IT
SAY IT
SHOUT IT
DISPLAY IT

Do something every day to get it out there!

4. Tie: MEDIA and FAIR VOTING
It's hard to tell which is more important, but if we can break through on either, we can fix the other.

But BOTH have to be fixed before we can get much else of substance done.

I care about everything that's wrong but you asked for just one passion in your list.

I figure there are millions of us, so that allows each us to work on and watch different issues concurrently.

MANY are working on the voting issues, I'm working on Civil/domestic rights. SSI, affordable housing, jobs, wages, abortion rights, healthcare etc... I continue to watch the congress while keeping my ear attuned to the OTHER heinous acts/laws proposed for the people by our fascist government.

In the next 10-20 years we will have to decide if we're going to tolerate a world corporate government that can overrule US laws and works only for the benefit of multinationals. They are lowering the standard of living in all nations which will contribute to continued global unrest and poverty. It is global fascism and it is the greatest threat to democracy today, I believe.

22. the Muddle East

We have to have a more comprehensive and plausible plan for when Iraq falls apart on the Bushies- a set of interrelated and committed positions on I/P, the Syrians and Iranians, the Saudis, Afghanistan, Pakistan. Positions all about helping them integrate in the Modern world over the course of the next 20-40 years at their own pace and settle their problems accordingly.

The domestic stuff all needs more and better and systematic work. For example, settling structural problems that permit election fraud and such requires a great deal more than a couple of lawsuits. There has to be some careful thinking about what constitutes acceptable human error and how to correct for it, and the vulnerabilities far beyond buggy software and dead batteries and ballot boxes that people forget to mark on checkoff sheets.

26. Short term: Killer Flu, then Peak Oil. Long term: Overpopulation
If the Asian Bird Flu manages to recombine so that it can be as contagious as regular flu, yet still as lethal, it could kill 1/4 of humanity in a few months. That should put it very high on anybodies priority list. In 1918 the flu killed 675,000 Americans in a few months.

After that I would have to say Peak Oil. However, Thermal Depolymerization may be the answer to it and to some other problems at the same time. I would want to investigate it to see if it really worked, and if it did, then I would want to have a massive Federal project to build TDP plants by the thousands and teach other countries how to do it. I would also make the inventor and developer of TDP ultra wealthy for making a discovery of such great value to humanity.

I don't have any solution for overpopulation. I suppose the killer flu might be nature's solution, but I would rather see the population come down gradually.
