A History of Alarms

I was alarmed...

• when the Radical Republican Right took out a "Contract on America," and re-declared "culture war."
  
• when they stalked, humiliated, sabotaged, and impeached President Clinton.
  
• by the disgraceful campaign that they ran against John McCain.
  
• when they selected a vituperative half-wit to represent their party.
  
• when they forced him into power in 2000.
  
• when they revealed their agenda - in all its regressive, predatory, culturally retarded, economically demented, "faith-based," bigoted glory.
  
• by the vicious attacks on 9/11/01.
  
• when they forced the "Patriot Act" into law.
  
• when they began enforcing its more repressive measures.
  
• by the anthrax attacks.
  
• because the primary targets of the anthrax attacks were liberal leaders and media figures.
  
• by the carnage that they unleashed in Afghanistan in the name of justice - which has yet to be served.
  
• when they turned our base in Guantanamo into a center for applied torture.
  
• by the disgraceful campaign that they ran against Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia.
  
• when they assumed control of every branch of our government.
  
• when they revealed their intention to wage preemptive war against Iraq.
  
• when they rebuked the international community.
  
• by the treachery that they employed against dissent.
  
• when I learned about the PNAC and the homicidal ideology it promotes.
  
• by their "shock & awe" campaign against the Iraqi people.
  
• when their war propaganda kicked into gear.
  
• when they magically transformed a preemptive war into a war of "liberation."
  
• by the horrors that they unleashed in Abu Ghraib and similar places.
  
• by their disgraceful presidential campaign this year.
  
• when they instituted the requirement forcing citizens to sign a loyalty oath before attending their campaign events.
  
• when the number of Americans killed in Iraq reached 1,000.
  
• by an election that activated so many alarms.
  
• by their arrogant displays and proclamations following the election.
  
• by the carnage that they unleashed in Fallujah.
  
• when they began to purge the CIA.

I am alarmed because...

• they opened old wounds in order to divide our nation.
  
• they lie about almost everything now.
  
• they are bankrupting our economy while strengthening China's hold over it.
  
• they have stretched our armed forces so thin that only a draft can mitigate this weakness.
  
• they are talking about a possible invasion of Iran.
  
• the media is their willing accomplice.
  
• the war in Iraq is rapidly spiraling out of control.
  
• the criminals responsible for the anthrax attacks have not been apprehended.
  
• the criminals responsible for 9/11 have not been apprehended.
  
• of the number of people who have lost jobs and healthcare in the last 4 years.
  
• the religious Right has a new mandate to continue poisoning the "values" well.
  
• the Democratic Party is heading toward the right.
  
• our oil-propelled civilization is running out of oil.
  
• this looks so much like the beginning of a nightmare.
  
• countless alarms have sounded and continue to sound, and still the nightmare continues.

Can you think of any "alarms" that I didn't list? I'm sure you can. With the Radical Republican Right it's one alarm after another. Why does it take so many alarms to wake some people? Perhaps they don't realize that the next one that goes off may not be an alarm.

When criminals are running the show, anything can happen. Some criminals - the most dangerous - will do anything to avoid justice. They commit one crime after another until they're in so deep that only a mountain of corpses can keep them from drowning.

"1 national emergency away from..."

It's a fearful thought under any circumstances. Under the present circumstances, it's a terrifying thought.

Right wing movements are nightmares.
