Dayton, Nelson and Stabenow at top of GOP hit list in 2006
New NRSC chief Sen. Dole plans to ‘grow the majority’

By Peter Savodnik

Democratic Sens. Mark Dayton (Minn.), Bill Nelson (Fla.) and Debbie Stabenow (Mich.) will top the Republican hit list under Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.), the new head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).

A GOP aide close to Dole said Tuesday — a day before Dole eked out a 28-27 win over Sen. Norm Coleman (Minn.) to become NRSC chairwoman — confirmed that Florida, where President Bush increased his margin in 2004, and the upper Midwest would figure prominently in GOP plans in 2005-2006.

The aide added that a race against Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) “could be competitive,” as well as contests in New York, California, Tennessee and, possibly, New Jersey.

Republicans would also like to target Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), whom most on both sides of the aisle consider a likely presidential contender in 2008.

1. Tennessee? They own Tennessee.
Kohl is not competitive, nor is Hillary, Boxer, or Corzine. Hell, I don't even think Dayton or Stabenow are all that touchable, and being well in touch with the state of Florida's politics, Bill Nelson would have to self destruct to lose there. These guys are fucking nuts.

2. Tennessee will be an open seat in 2006
Frist has made it clear that he is not running for reelection, and the state does have a Democratic Governor. It send more Democrats to the US House than it does Republicans (5-4).

7. Bill Nelson is vulnerable.
Republicans now hold all the top offices in Florida except for his seat. He won in 2000 by a margin of 52-47. And the Republicans have been doing an excellent job of finding some chink in the armor of a candidate and beating it into the ground. With Daschle it was his F rating from the NRA, and the NRA spent a lot of money to beat him.

I'm surprised Kent Conrad isn't being targeted. He also got an F rating from the NRA, and Bush won his state big. I'm also surprised Ben Nelson isn't a target. He squeaked out a 51-49 win in 2000, and Bush won Nebraska by something like 35 points. Maybe the Republicans haven't found strong challengers for them yet. I know they have a ton of people looking to run in Florida.

The only weakness the Republicans look to have is Santorum right now. It could be another bad year for Democrats.
