I just hate the thought of Roe v Wade being overturned
Edited on Sun Nov-14-04 03:28 PM by PlanetBev
I am old enough to remember when abortion was illegal and have several friends who went through unsafe abortions. I have been involved in the issue since 1976, when the issue first reared itself in the presidential campaign. I remember when there was a lot of moderate, pro-choide Republicans in the Senate and House who fought side by side with us on this issue. I remember watching as they disappeared, one by one. I saw this coming a long time ago, but now that it's really in our face, I can't bear it. Just the thought of the Right-to-Lifers cheering and gloating when the ruling is overturned is making me crazy.

A lot of people still think that the court will never overrule it, but they're wrong. The Republicans no longer need to hang on to this issue, as the feel they have a mandate in the bag. Can you imagine that repurcussions this will have? Americans are use to having rights given to them, not taken away. Sometimes I wonder if they'll even care.

I don't recognize this country anymore.

1. They gloat until their own daughters get butchered
and they will. I remember what emergency rooms were like in the late 60s and I lost a friend to an illegal abortion in the mid 60s.

Antiabortion laws kill women. They only stop the safe abortions.

4. The old Rep moderates are gone...
our whole political landscape is in a state of temporary disarray and reorganization. It has been that way for some time now, but things are finally coming to a head.

It's too bad that the Dem party leadership was so slow to realize it.

5. I agree Bev...
All they want to do is take the rights of the poor away. Let's face it a person who is wealthier and wanted a safe abortion would simply cross the border to Canada, Carribeans, Mexico, or Europe. This turning would do nothing but force the poor women to the back alley schysters.

Hyping the Peterson trial is another way the right is trying to turn RvW. Look a liberal from Cali killed his good looking wife and his unborn. Not to mention the law Shrub signed with Laci's family.

Rather than work to reduce the number of abortions that are needed, we are becoming more regressive.....

6. sometimes I think young women deserve what they get
I wonder how many women who have had abortions voted for bush because he would "keep us safe".

7. I share your fear.
I have heard some say the abortion issue is being used as a distraction by the republicans from some of the other thieving they do. But that is trivializing a woman's right to choice. This issue is what made me political in high school. After this election, I am thinking of getting in touch with NOW and planned parenthood again.

9. I'm getting my tubes tied very soon.
I was waiting til after all the election frenzy died down and when we knew the results.

The other party in our marriage is snipped and we've decided never to have children, but rolling waves of fear come over me when I consider what might happen if I was ever raped.

I'm not taking ANY chances with these nutjobs now in charge of my body. Now let's see if I can still GET my tubes tied. Every doctor in America is probably too terrified to do one.

10. Courage.
We're not there yet. Don't underestimate the cynicism of the rethugs. They realize that overturning Roe would result in a massive loss of votes for their candidates. That, of course, is no guarantee that it won't be overturned. The 'thugs hitched their wagon to the religious wingnuts and won't be able to control them. Opposition to abortion has been a winning issue for the 'thugs for 30 years now. No longer. They hold all the power. If Roe is overturned, millions of votes lost from moderates. If it's not overturned, the blame is squarely on them, resulting in a massive loss of support from jilted and bitter evangelicals. We'll have to wait and see.

11. I also think it will overturned
in some way. Not only that, but I also think that women will be further villified and hounded by the liklihood that there will be charges of manslaughter or murder against her should she have an abortion(legal or not) or even a miscarriage.

Visions of Nicolai Ceauscescu's Romania pop into my head, where abortions banned and there were forced pregnancies. Women were subjected to three month examinations in order to determine their reproductive state. I can even see the drying up of birth control pills, readily available to most women today. That seems impossible, but I still suspect something like it could occur.

12. No surprise that America supported Ceauscescu
We called him "our friend" because he was against Communism. The anti-choice laws that he put into place were appalling, at best.
Married women were also required by law to bear five children. The government-mandated gynecological exams were forced on women between the ages of 18 and 45, to determine if they had undergone an abortion.
The legacy of that monster was clearly seen by the warehousing of unwanted children.

Ceauscescu's wife Elena was equally vicious. The Romanian people liberated themselves on Christmas Day, 1989, when both of them were stood up against a wall and shot.

14. They don't have to dry up...
as long as there are nutjob pharmacists ready and willing to aid the Evangelicals in making it unavailable.

That scares the hell out of me more than anything.

15. New idea I had:
Edited on Mon Nov-15-04 09:09 AM by fudge stripe cookays
To trump the protestors who sit outside nearby abortion clinics, make your own posters:

"You can't be pro-life and FOR the war in Iraq."

Trump the pictures of dead fetuses by finding photos of horrible maimed children in Iraq and have them blown up. Put them on your posters. Only bigger.

Now you and several friends stand several feet away from the nutjobs and make a statement of your own.

We have to got to put these people into their true hypocritical context and show the world exactly what they are: pro-BIRTH and anti-woman.
