It's not 'over'. We weren't 'destroyed'.
The only thing we need to do is focus our message and learn how to frame our arguments better.

Bush won by the narrowest margin of any incumbent. Kerry won the second most popular votes of any presidential candidate.

Dynamics shift, cultural moods shift - the middle is fickle.

For the pugs, the center will not hold. It never does. That's just the way it goes.

We will win in the end. We always do. We won against the robber barons. We won the civil rights movement. The pugs have to at least make nice sounds about the environment cuz they know most Americans want environmental protections.

We will win on the gay marriage issue. Civil unions are coming. Even Cheney wants them. Once that happens full marriage is on its way.

The pendulum shifts, but the base upon which it rests is always moving in our direction.

Think about that.

This is why the right wing base always feels besieged. This is why even when they control everything they are nervous. They always feel the hot breath of change on the back of their necks. It makes them paranoid It ultimately brings them down.

And ultimately this is why they are vicious, hollow people. They know their victory will be short. The only succor they really get from this 'victory' is spite, which is what they are, like vultures, feeding on now right now.

1. Excellent post
You are absolutely right. The world has been moving left since the beginning of civilization. There are bumps along the way, but in the end we always win. I feel sorry for conservatives in a way. Every day they wake up must be another disappointment as the world moves on without them.

2. I Agree...
The trend in America is toward tolerance...

Live and let live has always been the ethos of America...

Gay marriage has some folks spooked but eventually most folks will come around...

3. what we need to do is expose the hateful extremist gay bashers
right now many of them like to talk ing terms of it really being about morals and family values. it's not gay bashing. they are just trying to protect the institution of marriage.

so we need to try to pass laws which are about specific rights for gays. when these people start opposing these things they will be exposed for what they are.

4. Well said, rockydem
"...the hot breath of change on the back of their necks..."

That's so true. Their well-being relies so much on the status-quo (e.g. everything we do requires oil, trees, more oil, poor laborers in other countries, more oil, etc) that the thought of change brings out the worst in them.
But change is coming! All over the world!

Thank you for posting this positive message. We all need it right about now.

:)

10. There's a book, "Sore Losers"
Check that out for an interesting look at our current sad state of culture and politics.

Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show" also observed that the GOP convention was filled with frothing-at-the-mouth anger, despite the fact that they party controlls all three branches of government. They have a victim mentality. It's the damnedest thing.

And rockydem, thank you for starting this thread. I'd recommend that anyone who's discouraged pick up the World Almanac and Book of Facts and look at the party make-up of Congress over the years. These things ebb and flow and shift rapidly. Being down a couple of seats or even a dozen is not an unmendable situation, despite the hysteria in the press and the gloating of the GOP.

5. Gay Marriage isn't coming

anytime soon. Even the Liberals in Oregon shot it down. This is such a fringe issue it isn't even funny.

7. I think it will come
Edited on Sat Nov-06-04 09:46 PM by rockydem
sometime within the next fifteen years. Civil unions will be much more commonplace than they are now sooner than that.

It's not funny to the folks who want to get married...

I'm not trying to go pc on anybody but I thought the one thing every liberal could agree on is that everybody's rights are precious....

9. The old pendulumn theory.
Don't count on a natural swing folks the deck is stacked against you. We've been had twice, get ready for a third time if there is a third time.

This was not a normal election.
