New Voter Suppression - FAKE letter from NAACP
http://www.scdp.org/blog.php?blog_id=73

In South Carolina, someone is circulating a FAKE letter claiming to be from the NAACP saying that voters will be arrested at the polls if they have outstanding parking tickets or are behind in their child support.

The letter also says that voters must show 2 photo IDs, a Social Security card and a handwriting sample in order to vote

1. That's one of the most despicable things I have ever heard of in my
life. I couldn't read the letter too well, but if this is being distributed for real it is criminal.

2. How awful!!!
The letter also says that you can't register to vote if you don't have a recent credit report. What is THAT about?

3. The one interesting part
Has S.C ever had a change of going democratic within the last 20 years? What would be the point of this?

6. There are probably state and local elections that could be influenced
This kind of thing has been going on in the south forever. After the slaves were freed they were re-enslaved through Jim Crow for another hundred years. Even since the Civil Rights acts of the 1960s suppression of the black vote in many southern communities has been the norm.

It might be more blatant this year, or it's possible that it's simply getting more attention because the Republicans have become so blatant in suppressing everybody's votes.

5. Jim Crow....
...this crap went on in 2000 too. They got away with it all: moving polling places at the last minute, giving people false information, voter intimidation, 'losing' absentee ballots, tossing out voter registrations from the other party, fraud, etc. NOW - it's 10 times worse this election. They're more blatant and even bolder because they got away with it last time. (actually, they've been getting away with this shit for decades....it's just gotten worse in 2000 and 2004).

This is ANOTHER think Kerry has GOT address once he's elected. There needs to be a SERIOUS SMACKDOWN on everyone (Dem or Rep) that has participated in this type of crap. This burns at the very CORE of our Democracy and it has GOT to be stopped!

7. didn't they do that in 2000 and/or 2002?
I remember reading that exact same thing here on DU a couple years ago. I think that time they also deliberately screwed up the date to the day AFTER the elections, just for good measure.

10. Why don't they track these people down? There should be
a federal law, that anyone participating the the suppression of votes goes to prison!
