Big white beatup pick up truck with a gun rack in the window
guy driving it was old, gray beard, denim overalls and no shirt underneath. No tailgate on the truck. Beer cans rolling around in the bed of it. Nothing unusual around here, except:

BIG. FAT. KERRY STICKER.

We gave each other a thumbs up.

I love this country.

Did I mention the NRA sticker on his bumper? He must be a real hit at meetings! ROFL!

3. I'd party with that guy!

I used to hang with this guy who was a total redneck. He had a truck like that as well, always full of empty beer cans, with a stash of full ones under the seat somewhere. He spent more time fishing than working, had actually been too drunk to fish at one point, had the most severe "hick" accent, and came across as this total, ignorant slob when you saw him anywhere except work.

He was a math professor and a radical liberal.

I adore incongruent images. I think I've subconsciously cultivated this preppy image for that reason. When people who see me during the day see me out at socializing, they're just stunned.

9. See my post below
I look very conservative and fit the "conservative" stereotype as far as my demographics go.

But I am FAR from being conservative, thank God. I have a brain and a heart.

18. One of my mottos ...

Always keep 'em guessing.

I prefer that people who ecounter me, especially those who don't know me well, never quite know what to think.

Hell, I almost made it onto a jury in which a death sentence could have been invoked. The lawyers never asked me any questions that forced me to betray my beliefs, which I thought was really odd no matter how I looked, but still. Prosecution just took one look at me I guess and thought, "Oh yeah, he'll fry 'im" while the defense apparently thought the opposite.

Guy copped a plea (not the trigger man), so the case never went anywhere. Would have been interesting to see if I made it through it.

20. I've always hoped for that
I garauntee you the jury picker people would peg me as pro-death penalty. Not that I look mean, LOL! I just have to look and dress very professional in my job and have a too-expensive haircut and professional color and highlights (I am bragging because for years my hair looked like crap and for two yrs I've been very very happy with it).

Plus I'm mid-30s, suburban, white, a mom, etc.

They'd be in for a surprise. I'm staunchly anti DP.

4. Cool
I had the opposite experience today. I was listening to AAR in my car while waiting in the pick up lane at the grocery store. I pulled up alongside a large SUV with B/C04, Thune, Dietrich, NRA, WWJD, and Right-to-Life bumper stickers. The driver, a young Mom with 4 kids, rolled her window down and asked me to turn my radio off. She said,"I don't want my kids to hear that filth!" I replied that I didn't want my kids to be subjected to her bumper stickers. Glare. Standoff. We both rolled our windows up and ignored each other after that.

40. The nearest grocery store to me is five miles one way. I think I'll drive!
But thanks anyway!

(By the way, when my children lived at home, I shopped for a family of six so even if I lived close enough to walk, I couldn't carry all the groceries home, though when we lived in town a few blocks away, we often "borrowed" the shopping cart and then took it back!)

7. Right, exactly
and that's what this guy seems to be doing.

Or he is like me and just being himself.

I think people look at my van and me and get a bit thrown off, too. Purple Heart license plates (husband's), A&M former student stickers (highly conservative school) then a BIG OL' TEXAS DEMOCRAT sticker and a Kerry sticker.

I dress very conservatively and fit all the supposed demographics of a bush voter.

But I'm a radical liberal! Always have been!

Sometimes I feel like I really confuse the shit out of people, but it's just because they live by stereotypes.

48. This campaign has done more to *remove* stereotypes
than to reinforce them IMO. I'm hearing stories of acres and acres of Kerry/Edwards signs all over these supposedly "red" states. I think maybe, just *maybe* people really are getting smarter as time goes by. Acting more in their own self-interests, at least, rather than just toeing the party line. :)

43. Me? I wear pearls.
I understand that my students have grouped me with the vast majority of "safe" profs. here at my conservative U. I dress for the job I have (and the upbringing I got in another region). Suit and mom's pearls! (flat shoes though because I like comfort and hate makeup!) still, its the stereotyping others do.

I look like someone's mother. In fact I am someone's mother. But, I'm a wild ass liberal!!!!! Always have been, always will be.

17. What is the * sticker with a white letter W on a black background?
I saw three of those things today alone. That is a Repub sticker, isn't it?? I think there is some text underneath the W but I couldn't get close enough to read it -- the vehicles were going 80-85 in a 70 mph zone. Does anyone know what it says?

All I can say is, I don't like the things. Something very fascist-looking about them.

19. Some * stickers
are really tiny. There's one that has a leeeetle white W on a navy blue background and it is a pretty little sticker. I could just barely tell it was a W but couldn't read the tiny print underneath. Finally I saw one on a parked car and it had the word "women" in even tinier letters under the white W.

What are they embarrassed of?

30. Ha! Great thread. People often mistake me for a Repub...
I still have a thick Southern accent, am a former Marine, former SoB (Southern Baptist), a gun owner, and just look like a Bubba, I guess.

And also currently an atheist who despises TV sports and is more likely to be curled with a book by Richard Dawkins or some damn furrin movie you have to read as you watch.

When I start ranting about politics, people's eyes literally bug out.
When they ask why I'm not a Repub, I usually guess it's because my Mama didn't drop me on my head.

50. Amen
I am an attorney (read: the guys * hates) in Houston. In order to fire for effect, and hang everyone up, I have my "Bubbas Against W," "Republicans for Kerry," "100 Club" (our Houston support group for slain law enforcement agents), and Texas hunters "Stop Poaching" stickers on my quite large SUV. I bought, and have given away, over 100 such Kerry stickers to people who stop beside me in Houston traffic and ask for one.

The other day, I got a dent in the side of the car as a "W" asswipe decided to cut me off. I wouldn't yield, and we had a fender bender. He got out, steaming and cursing, but I'm not a small guy, and he very quietly exchanged information with me. I told him that it was nice to see losers support losers. God I love this country.
