Bush asked to stop playing "Still the One"
John Hall, who wrote and recorded the song "Still the One" has asked Bush to stop playing this song at campaign rallies. Hall, and everyone else in the band, supports Kerry.

30. holy sh*t! what a "LITANY" of phtos showing Bush for what he is:
a putz who was promoted according to the Peter Principle to the level of his incompetence. Well, I guess that happened when he ran daddy funded businesses into the ground...

but JEEZ he sure has a way of looking like a complete loser.

FOUR MORE DAYS! FOUR MORE DAYS!

15. usually the record company owns the songs, not the artist
which, imo, sucks.

17. Not quite true
The copyrights to a song and to the recording of a song are two separate things, and may be controlled together or seperately. In this case, Bush was not only playing the song "Still the One" but also the original Orleans recording of it. Even if the label owned the master recording, the song itself is protected seperately.

I don't know if John Hall owns or controls the publshing rights to the song, or the master, and either way there are situations in which it could be played at a live event if the venue has paid its BMI or ASCAP fees. (A recorded commercial is a different matter.)

The rights issues are complicated and case by case. The MAIN point is that the author of the song and the musicians on the record
don't support Bush and don't want the song misused, which is the 5 rating story.

21. yeah, i didn't know the specifics of this case, was kinda off topic
but it does kinda reflect the adminstrations pattern of being more concerned with owership of intellectual property than creating it.

11. Ha ha! Still A Bum
Maybe they can use "Firewater Burn" instead.

I can't resist the urge to re-post my parody of "Still The One" - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=1199623&mesg_id=1199966

STILL A BUM

You've been fuhrer since way back when
Lord knows I never want to see you again
But I want you to know, after three-and-a-half years
You're still the Hun who feeds our fears

You're still the one who fills me with dread
Still the one I hope wakes up dead
You're a lazy fortunate son, and you're still a bum

I looked at your face every day
But I couldn't keep food down til I looked away
When winter came, I just wanted to go
Out to the protest, while you snorted blow

You're still the one that makes me laugh
Still the one making gaffe after gaffe
You think you're the chosen one, but you're just a bum

You're still the one who acts so strong
Posing in a flight suit with padded dong
We'll be having fun, when you're gone, you bum

Wretching, your war is growing mold
Time for you to fold, Cheney too

You're still the one who's out of touch
Still a bum making our lives rough
You won't be having fun, when we win this one

You're still the one you son-of-a-bitch
Still the one scamming us for the rich
You're worse than pond scum, and you're still a bum

You are still the one that makes me shout
At my TV, you stupid lout
We'll be glad we won, when you're finally gone...

22. What happened to Bush's supposedly "Very professional" campaign staff
That's all I've heard about the Bush campaign for months. They're supposed to be experienced, disciplined, thorough, etc. etc.

And in the last week they use an ad with completely retouched photos, a confetti bazooka blasts Bush and a crowd 5 minutes before he's done speaking, and now they've started using music they DID NOT get permission to use which was written by a guy who's band supports KERRY and is a move-on contibutor!

Gees.... oh yeah, did I mention the wolf ad was all bark and no bite?

John Hall's complaint was very well laid out. They used his song without permission and that's what is wrong.

26. I tip my hat to my former county legislator
You'd have thunk that maybe, maybe, before picking that song, someone might have done a little research and noticed that John Hall was a former Ulster County Democratic officeholder? :-)

But then I know the Republicans who were around in that part of NY in the days when John Hall was in office, and I'll bet that the majority of them have been driven out of the party by now. Maybe the ones in the know were sitting back, giggling, and just waiting for the shoe to drop. It's a shame I'm so oblivious about pop music and haven't a clue who wrote what, or I'd have had a good chuckle, too.

28. What is the deal with repubs?
They NEVER get permission to use songs. Didn't Dole use Soul Man (so brilliantly changed to "Dole Man") and then was told to cease and desist?

And didn't Reagan use Born in the USA or Little Pink Houses (such excellent choices) without permission?

(might have been MAD Magazine) posted that slogan as a caption below a picture of a very pregnant young lady. Heh.
