Zogby Tracking Poll - Colorado
From Zogby's daily battleground state tracking poll:

COLORADO - 9 Electoral Votes - 2000 Vote: Bush

Poll of 602 likely voters conducted Oct. 21 through Oct. 24. Margin of error +/- 4.1 percentage points.

ELECTORS FOR PRESIDENT

BUSH (R) - 45%
KERRY (D) - 49%
Other - 3%
Undecided -3%

More reason NOT to vote for Amendment 36 which split the electoral votes - We intend to deliver all 9 EV's to Kerry.

1. I Early Voted On Saturday
And voted "NO" on Amendment 36. Even though I collected signatures for its petition, I decided it was not in our best interests.

11. Now, if the League of Women Voters
would only change their endorsement of 36 we'd be in business. From where I sit, east of Denver proper it looks like Kerry all the way. It seems like Bush supporters don't even exist here.

4. I don't buy
Zogby's tracking polls. He has CO for Kerry and OH for Bush despite evidence to the contrary. Some weird results. Kerry's internal polling does not show the same thing.

17. Nor do I
I think CO is gonna go Bush and I think Ohio is gonna go for Kerry. These polls are too messed up.

20. Well, no offense to Colorado but if I had to
choose between Colorado and Ohio, ain't too tough a choice to make.

If Kerry takes Colorado, Bush is going back to Crawford for good. PLEASE LET IT BE SO!

9. tough call
I dont buy the Zogby polls. No way Kerry is up 4 in Colorado, and no way he is back 5 in Ohio.

Now, in terms of voting for the Colorado EV splitter I don't know. That's a tough call for a state that is becoming increasingly democratic.

8. Amendment 36
I often have some variation of this discussion with people here on DU. These kinds of decisions (like, whether your state should split the electoral votes) should never be brought based on the current political interest of your party. If you always vote for what makes sense in the long run, then you're bound to set the stage that will be friendly to liberal values -- since those represent the good of a majority of people. The more direct a democracy is, the less likely it is to be infected with diseases such as Neocon-ism.

I like Amendment 36, myself (though I'm not from CO), because I don't like the Electoral College. This would simply be a localized step closer to abolishing it. If every state split its electoral votes, we would be pretty close to direct popular-vote election of the President.

12. Yet, there are other reasons to vote no
Edited on Mon Oct-25-04 03:39 PM by HFishbine
Aside from the fact that it appears more likely for Kerry to win the White House with all of CO's nine votes then it is for all 9 of CO's votes to be crucial for Bush to win, another DUer pointed out a good reason for Colorodians to vote no. It made sense to me.

Without proportioned allotment accross the country, a scenario may develop where more enlightened states start alloting their EVs while solidly R states keep a grip on all their EVs. It's not hard to imagine a future where CO, CA, WA, OR, and others proportion their allotment while AL, GA, MS, IN and others make sure that no Dem ever gets a single of their EVs. You can see how this would put the Dems at a real disadvantage.

So, yes, by all means look beyond this current election, but make sure you consider all the possible consequences.

16. Excellent points - Constitutional amendment is only way to go so that
all of the states are apportioning EVs the same way.

15. I would vote No on 36, until every state is ready to do it
Not only does it set up a number of dangerous potential scenarios (e.g. CA splitting electoral votes while TX does not), it diminishes CO's electoral importance overall. If a state can be counted on to deliver 3 or 4 of its 9 electoral votes to either candidate regardless, it becomes a net pickup of 2 or 6 ev instead of 9.

10. Notes on Colorado....
Salazar will win...he even got the split endorsement with Bush from the post

Kerry will win, you will see voters come out of the woodwork...

amend ment 36 will lose as people see (on both sides) that they want all votes to go to their man...plus if it fails, that is one less hurdle to go over (likely court case) when the counting is done....

in about 8 days you will see that colorado will "remove all doubt" that Kerry is the next president...

18. WOW!!!! Hooraaaaaay!
I was just looking in my stats - in the 2000 race only 52% of heavily Democratic Adams County voted. I predict it will be closer to the 1996 percentage of 62 - maybe even the 1992 percentage of 77%! We are gonna TAKE THIS STATE!

NO ON 36.
