OMG too hysterically FUNNY! It's National Wolf Awareness Week
From Salon:

A funny way to celebrate National Wolf Awareness Week

The Bush-Cheney campaign picked an ironic day to release its latest fear-mongering attack ad, which features wolves as a menacing metaphor for terrorists. "This is the last day of Wolf Awareness Week in this country. The purpose is to debunk the myth about wolves being threats to humans," says Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, the political arm of the non-profit, which has helped foster wolf recovery in the U.S.

The week for wolves is being celebrated in such swingy election states as Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio. But apparently Bush hasn't gotten the message: No human being has ever been killed on U.S. soil by a wolf. "They are misusing the imagery of wolves to try to instill fear in the voting public," says Schlickeisen. "George W. Bush is the most anti-wildlife President we've ever had. And yet, here he is turning to what some would consider the very symbol of endangered wildlife in America for assistance in perpetuating his anti-wildlife administration." Maybe the Bush-Cheney camp has already long ago given up hope of winning the wolf-lover vote anyway.

"If that's not enough, his department has been terrible on wolves," Schlickeisen continues. "The Department of the Interior has proposals right now to remove endangered species protection prematurely that the wolves need to continue to survive. There are several lawsuits pending against them by conservation groups like ours.

"The interesting thing is that wolves have suffered from kind of myth perpetuation for a century, but the real wolf at their door right now is the Bush presidential campaign, which threatens four more years of its anti-wildlife policies."

Is bush the DUMBEST S.O.B. EVER, or WHAT! :D

1. Oh wow
Being from Michigan, where they've been trying to increase the wolf population, I find it all quite hilarious.

5. Wolves aren't all that menacing.

They are fascinating, beautiful creatures. I think many people today understand that wolves aren't our enemies. It's laughable, and what this ad really says is that this administration will use anything, ANYTHING to scare people with.

On edit: I heard they showed it to a focus group who thought it was very powerful. I suspect it was not a sample of reality-based people.

7. Now there's a statement I would bet on.
"I suspect it was not a sample of reality-based people."

I'm right there with you. Heck, they probably showed it to five year olds, in the dark, right before they went to bed. That would scare the *ahem* out of anyone. If you're five. :)

with my dogs) and have yet to witness a "pre-emptive strike".

Wolves are among the most intelligent and social animals in the world. They live in packs which are generally extended families --Pack members cooperate to maintain territories, obtain food and rear young. Yes, males (in fact all pack members) care for the pups a behavioral trait that is rarely reported in dogs (and humans)

19. I heard they said it polled well with middleaged women
the part they seem to have missed was that the women were probably saying aawww. those were some cute wolf pups.

6. October is Lupus Awareness Month and Lupus is Latin for wolf,
Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 05:53 AM by DemBones DemBones
of course. Just more synchronicity.

Edit: In case anyone doesn't know, Lupus is an autoimmune disease that is chronic and can be fatal. Since steroids became available for treatment, the prognosis for people with Lupus has improved. As recently as the 1950s, a typical Lupus patient died within five years of diagnosis.

Lupus affects women predominately and has a high incidence among blacks and Native Americans -- all of which helps to explain why you hear so little about the disease and why Lupus research is so underfunded.

8. Lupus is not funny.
But the timing sure is. By Saturday night the wolves will have become the symbol for Lupus and * will be known for trying to pass on disease to us. What's he trying to do? First the flu, now Lupus?
* <------- bad man. scary man. If he wants to scare us, put HIMSELF in the ad.

From all I've heard about Lupus, it's BAD. I hope you have more good days than bad ones. And I'm hoping you get the best day of all on Nov. 2. :)

Get a grip Bob.
As scary as Condi in a thong? I think not.

16. Wolves shouldd be left alone
If that is true, that no human has even been killed by a wolf on US soil, then there are many farmers who should be in trouble. They shoot wolves for the hell of it I think, but I know they "say" that they are doing it to protect their sheep and other animals. That may be true, but can't they just build fences? Or can wolves dig holes underground or climb fences now? Speaking of Shrub, well he didn't know that there are blacks in Brazil, so I doubt he knows much about wolves. I just wish people would learn to understand them before they went around killing them. We did the same thing to the Native Americans when our ancestors got here. Instead of trying to figure out a plan which is good for both sides, we just use our power to kill whoever annoys us or gets in our way. And it is sad since the wolf has done nothing to deserve it, except lived the life of a wolf.

22. We've had problems with wolf shootings in Door County
Someone shot a wolf last year, thinking it was a coyote. The DNR made a big point of warning people that the NEXT wolf killing will result in vigorous prosecution and jail, if necessary. (I think the guy last year got fined, but no jail time.)

Wolves are magnificent, sacred animals.

This ad should backfire, IMHO, especially among Native Americans.
